WAC Release (Men’s)
STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State Track and Field athletes Victoria Cameron and Gabriel Tosti earned their first WAC Athletes of the Week Honors of the outdoor season, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
For the second-straight week and in each of the first two weeks of the outdoor season, a Texan earned an athlete of the week honor. The pair of awards bump up the Purple and White’s total to 11 conference weekly honors and the third of the outdoor season.
After earning women’s track athlete of the week three times and WAC Freshman of the Year during the indoor season, Cameron notched her first outdoor athlete of the week honor. The Stephenville, Texas, native, earned a bronze medal in the women’s 100-meter sprint at the Texas Relays this past weekend. Cameron set the new wind-legal school record in the preliminary heats posted the third best qualifying time of 11.36 seconds. She then set the new school all-conditions record clocking in at 11.09 with a non-legal wind of 3.2 meters per second.
With her 11.09 mark, she tops the WAC in the outdoor season. Cameron also ranks third in the West Region among qualifiers for the NCAA National Championships. She also is fourth among all women in the NCAA in the 100 meters this season.
Tosti earns a WAC weekly honor for the first time this outdoor slate after earning indoor field athlete of the week during the indoor season. The senior also turned in a bronze-medal performance in the triple jump in the final day of the Texas Relays with a best leap of 16.13 meters. The Italian native earned his first Texas Relays medal at the event this past weekend, one of the most nationally-recognized meets in the nation.
Tosti posted the best triple jump in the WAC this season and is the only jumper in the conference to leap over 15 meters this year. He also has the third best leap in the West region and the fourth best in the NCAA this season.
Tarleton State will be back in action this weekend at the Bill Schmidt Invite hosted by North Texas on Saturday. Due to inclement weather, the originally-scheduled two-day event will now only be ran on Saturday at the Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
