South Caldwell took third in the team standings. The Spartans had a first-place finisher and six in the top four.




St. Stephens High School took second in the Best of the West tournament in West Jefferson on Dec. 28. The Indians scored 180 team points, 14 points short of first-place West Rowan. The Indians got two first-place individual finishes and seven wrestlers made the top four.

On Dec. 20 and 21, St. Stephens took second in the Mark Adams Holiday Classic in Cary. The Indians finished behind Hoke County with 179 team points. St. Stephens had three wrestlers finish first and five wrestlers who finished in the top six of their respective weight classSt. Stephens wrestler Avery Rhymer won at 215 pounds in both the Mark Adams and Best of the West tournaments.Fred T. Foard High School took seventh out of 26 teams, logging 130 points. The Tigers had one first-place finish and five wrestlers who finished in the top six of their respective weight class.

Newton-Conover High School took fifth out of 37 teams at the Great Smoky Mountain Grapple on Dec. 21 and finished sixth out of 34 teams at the Gate City Grapple on Dec. 27 and 28.The Red Devils had seven wrestlers finish in the top eight in their weight classes at Gate City. At the Great Smoky Mountain Grapple, Newton-Conover had six wrestlers who were among the best six in their weight class, including a first-place winner.Closer to home, a rising Maiden High School program took the top spot in the Maiden Christmas Classic on Dec. 21. The Blue Devils logged 257.5 points, beating out second place Spartanburg with 138. The St. Stephens B team took third with 134 points. The Blue Devils had six wrestlers win their divisions.Bunker Hill High School picked up an individual first-place finish and second-place finish in the tournament to take eighth as a team.Bandys High School took third in the Greyhound Classic on Dec. 21. The Trojans also picked up eight wins in nine matches in the Carolina Clash Duals on Dec. 27 and 28.Girls wrestlingBandys wrestler Kaylah Evans took third place at 157 pounds in the Carolina Clash Women’s Individual on Dec. 28. The tournament featured 174 wrestlers from across the Carolinas and Georgia.A week earlier, three Bandys wrestlers placed in the top three at the Greyhound Classic Girls.On Dec. 14, Hickory High School’s Neveah Tomlinson took first place at the Big Cat Girls’ Invitational at 120 pounds. Judith Bustos finished in third place at 114.
