VILLANOVA, Pa. – Life lessons can come on and off the field for student-athletes any given day, but the chance to lean into personal and professional development proves just important. The Black Student-Athlete Summit has become an annual trip for members of the Villanova Athletic Department where they can receive that first-hand education and training.

This year, a group of eight student-athletes and two staff members made their way to Chicago for the four-day event that is geared toward equipping athletes and administrators alike with tangible skills, connections and insights to build leadership and support systems.

The Wildcats met up with Villanova Alumni in a networking event that kicked off the week. From there, they engaged in meaningful and purposeful conversations and programming that bolstered their skillset both on campus and beyond their college careers. Throughout the week, they sat in speaking sessions, took part in Pro Day and a Grad/Job Fair to network and meet other like-minded individuals who could offer up encouragement and inspiration through their own professional journeys both in the sports world and in various walks of life.

This year’s Summit featured a specific theme that each day was geared towards – Mental Health, Financial Literacy and Professional Development. Two Villanova alumni also led presentations during the event. Former Villanova football player Nowoola Awoneto (’20), currently pursuing his doctorate degree in Psychology at VCU, presented “From the Playing Field to Ph.D: Redefining Athletic Identity and Preparing for Life Beyond Sport” while Assistant AD/UNITAS Leashia Lewis (’00 and ’02) presented on the rise of women in sports with “‘Now I’m Hot, They All on Me’: The women’s Sport Boom and College Sport Leadership Decisions and Interests”.

“It is a gift and a blessing to bring student-athletes to what, I know, is a transformative experience intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and mentally,” said Lewis. “Further, it allows me to know that as I live in my purpose, I am not alone, and that people dedicated to the advancement and development of our scholar athletes are making an impact. I am thankful to Villanova Athletics for supporting us in attending such life-changing professional and personal development experiences such as the BSAS.”

Lewis once again led the contingent of ‘Cats on their trip to the Summit. Since first traveling to the Summit in 2022, Villanova has now sent 34 student-athletes to the event representing various sports.

Some of the Wildcats on the trip reflected on why the Black Student-Athlete Summit was impactful to them and what they took away from the week:

“The mental health talk about ‘Yourself A1’ really stood out to me identify your A1, your situation, your spiritual path, and your routine. It opened the door to my spiritual journey and helped me begin finding inner peace. Attending this gave me more hope in the world it showed me that I can become whatever I want, as long as I have the drive and confidence, especially as a Black man in today’s society.” – Michael Kennedy, Football

“We (athletes) are the game changers in the world.” – Derrick Smith, Track and Field

“The lessons will be valuable for the rest of my life, and I can’t wait to see how I apply them in my future. Another cool part was talking to people of different walks of life and having things in common with them. Seeing people successful in many different fields prove anything is possible, especially since they are telling you their keys to success.” – Jayvont Williams, Football

“Be purposeful in everything you do! Be the best at whatever you’re doing at the moment. I think in a lot of spaces on campus, there is limited representation of people that look like them. The summit showed our students there are people that look like us in any field they’re interested in. Be authentic, be purposeful, go all in on yourself!” – Charles Davis, Office of Academic Support

GREENWOOD, Ind. (June 17, 2025) – The University of North Alabama beach volleyball team collected four more postseason honors on Tuesday, with Katy Floyd, Ryenne Gepford, Selma Robinson and Lucy Wedding all selected to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team.

This marks another solid postseason haul for the Lions, as the top-flight duo of Floyd and Robinson add to their Atlantic Sun Conference Pair of the Year honor and First Team All-ASUN selections with their first-career CSC Academic awards. Gepford earns the academic distinction for the second-straight year, while Wedding receives her first career postseason award.

To be eligible for the team, the student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically while having at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. Players also must be in the lineup for 70 percent of all matches played during the season.

Floyd, Robinson, Gepford and Wedding were key pieces from this past season, helping the Lions finish with 18 wins and a berth in the ASUN Conference Tournament. The four also helped UNA secure two wins in the postseason championship.

The No. 1 pair all season, Floyd and Robinson combined for a 22-10 overall record with a 9-1 mark in conference play. The two earned the program’s first ASUN Pair of the Year, along with both players setting career milestones on the season. Robinson surpassed the 50 career win mark, while Floyd become the program’s all-time career wins leader. Floyd’s final win tally rests at 88 while Robinson is fourth all-time with 69 victories.

Gepford’s senior season concluded with a 17-14 record with a 6-4 mark in the ASUN. Playing all her matches from the second flight, her season highlight came on opening day with a flight-two win over No. 6 Florida State. Gepford additionally was named to the 2025 ASUN All-Tournament Team.

For Wedding, her first career beach volleyball honor comes after a 12-12 season with a 5-2 record in conference play. She and partner Mabrey Whitehead helped claim a fifth-flight win against No. 16 Georgia State on the season, also securing a win over Jacksonville in the ASUN Tournament opening round.

Floyd and Robinson will also be up for vote in the CSC Academic All-America voting pool, which is selected by sports information directors across the nation. The two look to become the second and third player in program history to achieve the feat, looking to follow behind the program’s first winner in Spring 2023 — former standout Paula Klemperer.

The All-America team will be announced Wednesday, July 8.

AUSTIN, Texas – College Sports Communicators announced on Tuesday that TCU beach volleyball players Daniela Alvarez and Ana Vergara have been tabbed to the CSC Academic All-District At-Large Team.

The CSC Academic All-District Team honors student-athletes for their performances both competitively and in the classroom. The At-Large program allows institutions to nominate six nominees per gender per school in sports that do not already have CSC Academic Teams.

This marks the third consecutive year Vergara has earned CSC All-District accolades, while Alvarez is being tabbed to the list for the first time.

Alvarez has earned a flurry of awards after an uber-successful season. Most notably, she was named AVCA Collegiate Beach Player of the Year and earned All-America and All-Big 12 accolades following her 28-6 season. The 2024 Paris Olympian appeared in the No. 1 spot for the Horned Frogs in every match in 2025 and only suffered two losses in her final 20 matches of the season.

The 2025 season was Vergara’s most successful of her career. She competed mainly alongside Anhelina Khmil, with the duo posting a 21-1 record en route to being named the Big 12 Pair of the Year. Vergara also earned All-Big 12 Team honors, and posted an overall record of 27-3 during the year.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The 2025 Academic All-District® teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances in competition and in the classroom. Cal State Bakersfield excitedly announces eight Roadrunner scholar-athletes who earned the distinction on Tuesday as part of the At-Large program.

The CSC At-Large program seeks to honor student-athletes from a wide range of sports while holding to one of the highest standards of competitive and academic success across all national recognitions. Institutions are able to nominate a maximum of six men and six women total from the list of sports. Of the sports on the At-Large list, Cal State Bakersfield sponsors wrestling, beach volleyball, and women’s golf.

Men

Santino Sanchez and Chris Neal have earned Academic All-District honors, marking the third-straight year at least one CSUB wrestler has earned the nod. Sanchez, who hails from Whittier, Calif., is a back-to-back honoree and continues his role as Bakersfield’s primary starter at 133 pounds. He has maintained a 3.60 cumulative GPA as a business administration major.

Neal was one of CSUB’s most diverse tools this season, wrestling across three different weight classes as the team needed. The selfless student-athlete excels in the classroom as well, boasting a 3.72 GPA in his business finance studies.

Women

The `Runner women are represented by a pair of golfers and four CSUB beach volleyball student-athletes.

Junior golfer Sarah Mutai picked up her second Academic All-District nod after earning the honor in 2024. Mutai has been one of Bakersfield’s top performers on the golf course each of her three seasons and is the program’s all-time leading in career scoring. Mutai owns a 3.78 cumulative GPA as a kinesiology major.

Joining Mutai from the golf ranks is senior Nicole Whipple. The team captain, Whipple graduated from CSUB this spring with a degree in English while maintaining a 3.91 GPA.

From the `Runner beach volleyball team, Ella Erteltova returns as a repeat honoree while her partner, Vivi Kaelin, earned a nod as well. The duo who have paired exclusively together for the past two seasons own Bakersfield’s career record for most victories and they have earned All-Big West honors in back-to-back years. Erteltova just walked across the stage at Commencement, earning her degree in kinesiology. Kaelin is a sophomore working on a business administrator major and has a 3.58 cumulative GPA.

Also representing CSUB Beach Volleyball on the Academic All-District list from beach volleyball are Ella Ensign and Bailey Combs. Another sophomore, Ensign has a 3.65 GPA as a kinesiology major and ranks third in career wins right behind her teammates. Combs was a graduate transfer to CSUB this year, who has a 3.87 GPA in her studies at CSUB. She hopes to become a doctor or physician’s assist in the future.

Academic All-District and All-America

Nominated student-athletes must meet minimum athletic requirements, varying depending on the sport. Academically, candidates must maintain at least a 3.50 GPA, one of the highest benchmarks for national recognitions.

Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in the coming weeks.

With one lap remaining in a tactical 5,000-meter race last Friday, Oklahoma State sophomore Brian Musau unlocked one more gear to fend off Villanova’s Marco Langon and secure the NCAA title.

It completed Masau’s indoor-outdoor sweep in the event and marked his second straight All-America finish in the 5K, adding to his growing legacy at OSU.

The performance was one of the many highlights for OSU at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

In the field, senior Blair Anderson recorded a leap of 8.02 meters (+2.4 wind) on his first attempt, enough to maintain second place and be named a first team All-American for the long jump. Anderson’s new personal best made him the third Cowboy to earn first team All-America honors in the event outdoors, and he came one centimeter shy of the school record of 8.03 meters set by Jacob Fincham-Dukes in 2017.

On the women’s side, Emma Robbins closed out her stellar collegiate career with a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw, earning her first team All-America honors for the second time. Robbins’ exceptional consistency at OSU leaves a lasting impact on the program as she claimed school records in the hammer and weight throw. She will leave Stillwater as one of the most accomplished throwers in program history.

Fellow Cowboy Fouad Messaoudi posted a personal-best time of 13:25.48 in the 5K to join Musau on the podium and claim first team All-America honors. In the 10,000 meters, sophomore Denis Kipngetich placed ninth, good for second team All-America honors. The performance added to OSU’s consistent success in the event as at least one Cowboy has placed in the top ten six straight years at nationals.

For the Cowgirls, freshman Isca Chelangat captured second team All-America honors in the 5K, while Annie Molenhouse did the same in the heptathlon. Molenhouse’s string of events included a personal record of 13.94 in the 100-meter hurdles, contributing to her total of 5,669 points.

Despite a resilient race from junior Kaylie Politza that featured a tumble to the track, she fell short of qualifying for the 800-meter final. Lastly for the Cowgirls, Josphine Mwaura made her NCAA championship debut in the 10K last Thursday.

In the men’s 1500-meter qualifier, senior Alex Stitt got caught in a tough race that was decided in the last 100 meters, resulting in a 20th-place finish.

The Cowboys totaled 19 points across the four days, good enough to rank eleventh out of 72 teams. The result is their highest since 1984 as the focus now shifts to the offseason.
