P.E.I. was pivotal in numerous significant occurrences in the early automotive history of Canada. Father Georges-Antoine Belcourt from Rustico was the first Canadian to purchase a vehicle, the initial Canadian to import an automobile into Canada, and became the first Canadian driver in 1867 when he operated his horseless carriage during the St. Jean de Baptiste Day festivities in Rustico.
