The launch of Whoop’s latest Whoop 5.0 and the Whoop MG (medical grade) has been marred with complaints about the wearables failing for a significant portion of early buyers.

For those unaware, Whoop wearables are primarily known for their fitness-tracking features, but they also offer robust health monitoring capabilities. With the new Whoop MG, the company is expanding its health-focused features, complete with blood pressure insights and “clinically-accurate ECG readings.”

The promising debut, however, is now being overshadowed by reports of the new wearables dying.

This isn’t an isolated incident. A large number of users have aired their grievances online, with issues primarily affecting those with the MG model, as highlighted by TechIssuesToday.

It appears I’ve got a dead MG. It arrived two days ago with 98% charge. Battery pack seemed charged and I used it to initially get the MG into pairing mode. After ~1 day of seamless operation I woke this morning and noticed it hasn’t synced up overnight and now nothing I do can get it to wake up or show any LED lights. Battery pack appears fine.

Users’ MG devices reportedly stopped working without any warning signs, remaining unresponsive even after being fully charged.

The company is actively issuing replacements

User reports have made their way to Whoop’s community forum, and although the company is yet to share the root cause of the issue, it seemingly is offering replacement devices to those affected.

“We’ve noticed your WHOOP may not be syncing as it should. We have proactively sent you replacement WHOOP right away,” reads the company’s email to an affected user. Several others confirmed that they’re being sent replacement units too.

The company also shared some troubleshooting steps, which included checking the battery pack, charging the Whoop MG sensor for at least 15 minutes, force restarting the device, and pairing the device again. I have yet to see a single Whoop MG case where any of the troubleshooting steps offered relief. If you’re facing the same issue with your new Whoop, submitting a support request for a replacement device might be your best bet.

This is a major quality control blunder on Whoop’s part. It is plausible that an early batch faced some mass manufacturing defects, and the company is now shipping replacements from a newer batch, though that’s just speculation.

Before we go any further, in order to fit the Gym Monster 2 into your home, you’ll need a little space to fit the machine in, but much less than most conventional home gyms; this takes up a seriously small amount of room when lined up in its closed position against the wall. Once folded down it does need a bit more room but not a massive amount; think the surface area a rowing machine or one of the best treadmills would take up.

The development of Internet of Things, big data analysis, and artificial intelligence (AI) has made athlete digitalization crucial in competitive sports. In a research article published in Nano Energy, Zhong Lin Wang and his colleagues first proposed the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), driven by Maxwell displacement current to efficiently convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.

The review highlights the recent advancements in TENG applications for intelligent sports, including sports facilities, wearable equipment, and medical health devices. TENG-based sports facilities can monitor the status of athletes, improving training efficiency and competitive outcomes. One study, published in Nature Communications by Luo et al., proposed a flexible and durable wooden TENG-based intelligent table tennis table, which provided training guidance and real-time competition assistance for athletes and referees. In addition to sports facilities, TENG can also be designed as a wearable device with the advantages of lightweight, portability, flexibility, and self-power supply. In a study featured in npj Flexible Electronics, Zhang et al. developed a low-cost triboelectric smart sock, which demonstrated high stability and adaptability in gait monitoring, including jumping, running, sliding, and walking. In the future, this wearable system could accelerate the development of digital human technologies, enabling the creation of real-time digital human replicas in virtual environments.

TENG also shows potential as a medical health device in sports-related fields such as disease diagnosis, injury prevention, and rehabilitation monitoring. In another study published in Nature Communications, Ouyang et al. designed a fully implantable symbiotic pacemaker. This self-powered pacemaker has been successfully tested in large animals, demonstrating its ability to not only pace the heart but also correct sinus arrhythmia, helping to prevent disease progression. With continued technological advancements, TENGs are expected to play an increasingly vital role in sports rehabilitation and other medical fields.

“The rapid development of TENG technology has opened up new avenues for intelligent sports,” says Wang. “It provides a completely self-sufficient, flexible, wireless, multi-functional, and personalized platform for sports applications, enabling transformative advancements in sports training, injury prevention, and patient recovery. This technology will pave the way for a more intelligent and data-driven future in sports.”

According to complaints on Whoop’s community forums and X, after setting up a Whoop MG, the wearable can mysteriously became unresponsive hours later, refusing to connect to a smartphone even when it should be charged. “I wore it for about 20 hours or so, but then it suddenly disappeared from the app, no sensor lights on, nothing appearing in the app,” one new Whoop MG owner shared on Reddit. On the company’s forums, Whoop suggests trying things like charging the MG, reconnecting it to your phone or resetting the wearable to see if that fixes things. Whoop owners have also been directed to contact Whoop’s Support team, and multiple faultyWhoop MG owners report that they’re being sent replacement wearables.

Engadget has contacted Whoop to get a sense for how widespread this issue is and what the company is doing to address it. We’ll update this article if we hear back.

Unlike other companies, Whoop doesn’t expect customers to buy a fitness tracker and then pay a subscription; Whoop’s subscription fee is inclusive of its hardware. With the Whoop 5.0 and Whoop MG, the company is also hoping to expand the number of metrics it tracks beyond just activity and sleep tracking to things like real-time stress monitoring and, in the case of the MG, blood pressure and ECG readings. What features you’re able to access ultimately depends on both the wearable you have and the subscription you’re paying for, though.

To access the Whoop MG in particular, you have to pay $359 annually, which starts to feel pretty egregious when the wearable might not work. Prior to this issue, Whoop was also caught denying free hardware upgrades to existing customers after previously suggesting it would send out new wearables to anyone who’d been a member for six months or more. Whoop reversed that decision a few days later.

Fit:match, a technology company specializing in 3D body scanning and analysis, is making waves in the athletic and fitness world with Reflect—a patented, single-sensor 3D LiDAR system developed in partnership with Intel Corporation’s RealSense technology to equip coaches and athletes with rich insight into performance potential and injury risk.

The startup recently brought its tech to the historic Penn Relays, where more than 130 athletes, from elite high school runners to pro-level track stars, underwent full-body scans. The data collected is now being compiled into what Fit:match says is one of the most comprehensive body-shape datasets ever gathered at a major track and field event.

Fit:match has compiled a report based on its findings, revealing how body composition and muscle-to-bone ratio correlate with performance and injury risk and offering coaches and scouts valuable insights for player evaluation, training optimization and injury prevention.

At the event, Fit:match collected Reflect scans of several athletes aged 17 to 22, finding that among male athletes aged 17 and above, muscle-to-bone ratio (MBR) showed a strong negative correlation with race times, indicating that as MBR increases, race times significantly decrease.

Beyond speed, higher MBR enables stronger muscle contractions, enhances torque at key joints, improves power-to-weight ratio and increases mechanical efficiency.

Fit:match also identified key markers tied to injury risk, revealing correlations between specific body measurements and the likelihood of injury. The findings showed that larger calf circumference correlates with a higher frequency of ankle sprains. Similarly, broader shoulder-to-elbow width differentials were linked to an increased risk of shoulder injuries due to greater stress on the shoulder joint.

Other findings demonstrated low to moderate or slight correlations between certain body measurements and injury frequency. For example, there is a slight correlation between athletes with a larger wingspan-to-shoulder breadth ratio and a lower frequency of shoulder injuries. However, those with a larger upper arm-to-forearm circumference ratio showed a slight correlation with a higher frequency of elbow injuries.

“We’re rolling out Reflect to more schools and expanding across football, baseball, soccer and track and field,” Fit:match CEO Haniff Brown said. “Our mission is to democratize access to elite-level tech—bridging a major gap in the market with cost-effective AI and computer vision tools built for sports and fitness. Pro teams are already using Reflect to gain performance and injury insights that once took weeks to uncover, and the feedback from coaches, scouts, and sports scientists has been incredible.”

In the coming months, Fit:match says it plans to roll out new features driven by market demand, expand its technology into gyms and training centers and unveil endorsements from top names in sports.
