CONWAY, S.C. — Former Coastal Carolina University baseball standout Connor Owings was added to the staff as volunteer assistant for player development Head Coach Kevin Schnall announced.

Owings, a native of Gilbert, S.C., was a three-time All-Big South selection while playing at Coastal Carolina University. In 2016, he hit .352 with 16 homers and 57 RBI in leading the Chanticleers to the College Worlds Series championship, beating Arizona in the best-of-three series finale.

He recently had a playing stint with Ponce in the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League and Margarita in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.

“We are lucky to have Connor Owings back in teal,” Schnall said. “A National Champion player and person, we are thrilled to have him back on board. His passion, leadership, and dedication will be invaluable as we continue to strive to remain one of the most successful college baseball programs in the country. We look forward to the positive impact he will have on our whole program!”

Owings pro career has taken him all over the world from America to Australia and Latin America and now back to Conway.

  • Most remarkably, he missed the 2018 season after undergoing a kidney transplant and returned to play 95 games with Gateway of the Frontier League in 2019.
  • He was inducted into Coastal Athletics’ Sasser Hall of Fame in 2021 — both as an individual player and as a member of the 2016 National Championship winning baseball team.
  • Named the 2016 Big South Player of the Year, Owings also snagged First-Team All-America honors from the ABCA and NCBWA, second-team accolades from Collegiate Baseball and D1Baseball along with a third-team nod from Perfect Game. He was an ABCA All-Region first-team honoree and a 2016 Greg Olson Award finalist.
  • He started and played every game over three seasons — from 2014-16 — and was tabbed for the 2010-19 Big South Baseball All-Decade Team.
