Jackson County boasts a rich legacy of formidable and competitive high school athletic teams.

While basketball is the most celebrated sport in the county, other sports are also gaining traction.

Fastpitch softball has not been prevalent at the high school level in this region for very long, yet local teams are starting to shine.

Over the last couple of seasons, three different teams from Jackson County — Woodville, Scottsboro, and Pisgah — have participated in the state tournament.

Pisgah is widely recognized as a powerhouse in the sport; The Eagles have captured seven state championships and been runners-up twice over the last 14 seasons.

Scottsboro has also emerged as a consistent state contender, accumulating numerous area titles and making multiple consecutive appearances in regional tournaments. Last year, the Wildcats reached the state tournament.

When the Alabama Sports Writers Association unveiled their inaugural prep softball rankings of 2013 on Thursday, Scottsboro achieved the No. 1 rank in Class 5A — marking a first in the program’s history — while Pisgah held the top spot in 3A.

There’s still a lengthy season ahead ó Pisgah hasn’t even begun its season yet — and these rankings don’t guarantee success. Nevertheless, they serve as a strong indication that these teams have a great chance at securing state titles this season.

Being ranked No. 1 comes with its own set of challenges. Opposing teams will always be aiming to dethrone you from your position.

However, securing the No. 1 rank is also a mark of esteem. It’s an acknowledgment that players and coaches should take pride in.
