Five Colorado Buffaloes Freshmen Most Likely To Make Early Impact For Deion Sanders

First impressions are everything. In modern college football, they might as well be part of the job description.
While the Colorado Buffaloes have relied mainly on experience under coach Deion Sanders, numerous true freshmen have made names for themselves over the years. Offensive tackle Jordan Seaton and wide receiver Drelon Miller exceeded expectations out of high school in 2024.
As the page turns to 2025, Colorado is steadily becoming a team with plenty to prove. Heisman Trophy-winning wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders are among a flock of experienced names headed to the NFL and beyond, opening the door for unproven talent to break through.
The Buffs have plenty of raw newbies littering the roster, including speedy Texas-born wide receiver Quentin Gibson, hulking four-star linebacker Mantrez Walker and versatile offensive lineman Carde Smith.
So, who’s next?
Branch has all the tools necessary to be another one of Coach Prime’s prized Florida boys. The native of Miami, Florida, was a four-star Penn State Nittany Lions commit before flipping to the Buffs last September. He finished his pre-college career at Northwestern High School under coach and NFL quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.
Branch was a massive bright spot during April’s spring game, diving to snare an interception off the grass and making several excellent tackles in space. Listed at 6-3, 170, Branch presents a slender, fluid build and proven ball skills to a safety room that lost its veteran presence in Shilo Sanders and Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig.
No position in Boulder has been scrutinized more than the offensive line. While walk-on center Cash Cleveland managed to break into the starting unit and become an On3 Freshman All-American in 2024, Gooden has a chance to up the ante.
Gooden was a four-star prospect ranked in 247Sports’ top 200, tabbed the No. 12 interior offensive lineman and No. 3 recruit from Tennessee. While he’ll have to catch some Z’s for a starting spot (Zarian McGill, Zy Crisler), Gooden is a 6-3, 380-pound goliath with pristine potential and a recruiting history with new offensive line coach Gunnar White.

The Buffs’ defensive line led the Big 12 in sacks last season and only added more to the party. Of the pass-rushing newcomers, Merritt stands out with his blend of power and finesse. It warranted a four-star rating out of IMG Academy and an initial commitment to the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Colorado flipped Merritt last December and will add him to a fold that recently lost a talented underclassman in defensive end Taje McCoy. He’ll have experience to overcome, but there’s a great chance Merritt ends up in the edge rotation and opposing backfields by year’s end.
Colorado lost nearly all its historic receiving corps from 2024, leaving Farrakhan and other newcomers with massive shoes to fill. However, the four-star has every trick in the bag to fit right in.
Farrakhan dominated as a receiver and returner at North Shore High School (Houston, TX) and garnered offers from the Alabama Crimson Tide and Texas A&M Aggies before instilling belief in Sanders and the Buffaloes. He boasts advanced route running and change of direction for his age, bringing a well-roundedness that many of Colorado’s current receivers lack.
After the commitment flip heard ’round the world from the USC Trojans to Colorado, Lewis is in the limelight as he enters year one of his college career. The product of Carrollton, Georgia, trusted his talent enough to bypass his senior year of high school.
While his time on the field isn’t a given, Lewis has traits similar to what helped Sanders captain Colorado’s offense to prominence over the last two seasons. He’s undersized yet poised and deadly accurate, giving him a shot in a quarterback battle against senior Liberty Flames transfer Kaidon Salter.

Top 10 College Football Jobs in the NIL Era
On3 hosts Andy Staples and Ari Wasserman recently broke down their lists for which schools have the best jobs in this NIL era.
Here is what Wasserman had to say regarding where Texas is:
“No. 1 is Texas to me…I think Texas is a place that has been a bully…It’s a historical program…I would die to go to Texas.”
Wasserman also noted how he thinks the idea of being able to be the person who delivers on bringing a national title back to Austin could be too tough to pass up.
That could be what a lot of recruits and coaches are thinking about.
Following Texas on Wasserman’s list are the national champion Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, Texas A&M Aggies, LSU Tigers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Michigan Wolverines.
What Attracts Coaches and Recruits to These Schools?
These schools are attractive to head coaches and players for a number of reasons.
First of all, it is the atmosphere and the chance to win a national title that could motivate these players and coaches. Additionally, the financial side is now way more significant because of the rise of NIL.
However much money a school wants to offer either a coach or a player certainly matters. Then, there are other attractions such as the city and community around the program.

A place like Austin, Texas, is a big piece of the puzzle for coaches and players because there is so much to do. Other schools, such as Notre Dame, have a rich history and pageantry that make it hard to pass on.
All in all, these schools have their own unique qualities that make people want to come there, then it is just a matter of bringing a title back to the school.

The Alabama Crimson Tide has been out to prove that it is more than just a football school of late, and the university’s official Name, Image, and Likeness collective, Yeah Alabama, has announced that the basketball program is working toward scheduling a game on the biggest of stages.
The game is expected to take place on November 8, and see the Tide take on the St. John’s Red Storm at Madison Square Garden. It is expected to be the most anticipated non-conference matchup of the 2025-26 season.
Alabama is coming off a 28-9 campaign and their second trip to the Elite Eight in as many years, and the Red Storm is coming off a 30-4 record in their second season under head coach Rick Pitino.
The Crimson Tide is more of a recent college basketball power, while St. John’s’s heyday came nearly 50 years ago, but could be returning soon.
The two teams last met in 1982 and have played to a 2-2 record against each other. The matchup in November will see two of the game’s elite coaches facing off, Nate Oats and Pitino, and could be an early preview of a potential tournament matchup. While both teams were in the 2024-25 NCAA Tournament, they could not have faced each other before the National Championship game.
Alabama will lose several of their key players to the NBA draft this summer, and suffered many blows in the transfer portal. Instead of resting on his laurals, Oats also attacked the transfer portal, bringing in standouts such as Jalil Bethea, Noah Williamson, and Taylor Bol Bowen, while also expecting three incoming four-star freshman. The Tide is expected to be in the National Championship chase.
For the Red Storm, they are expected to be a frontrunner in the coming season. Pitino and his staff have been no strangers to working the portal and landed coveted talent the likes of Ian Jackson and Bryce Hopkins, to go along with returning star center Zuby Ejiofor.
If the deal comes together as planned, and all of the stars are able to take the court, it is destined to be an entertaining affair for the masses at The Garden.

After firing now-former head coach Kevin Kruger, the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels men’s basketball team made a big splash this offseason when they hired former Georgia Tech head coach turned television analyst Josh Pastner for their head coaching job. So far, this offseason has been viewed as extremely successful for his first year with the program, particularly with what he’s done through the transfer portal.
Recently, Pastner sat down with the Las Vegas Review-Journal and spoke about the current landscape of college basketball and the impact the transfer portal has had on the game.
“It’s a totally different world,” he said. “Doing television, I can’t tell you how many times talking to different coaches (I’d hear) how much they did not like the landscape. I actually enjoy this.”
He spoke about how in today’s game, everything is so much faster-paced and short-term than it was even a few years ago when he was coaching:
“At the end, they say they’re going somewhere else, and it’s devastating. Or if you win and get the guy, you’re so excited. The difference right now is everything is streamlined. Instead of two to three years, it’s two to three weeks. And it’s so much quicker. … So I love this, because I’m all about efficiency. Less is more.”
He spoke about the experience of missing out on a player you expected to have on your roster and what you have to do to bounce back using a “high-level” player who overslept for a meeting as an example.
“So we went to somebody else. It wasn’t going to be the right fit. You’ve got to get ready to move on to the next deal… If you have a tough loss, or you’re in a tough stretch, how do you bounce back (from) that quickly? You’ve got to move on to the next thing and not dwell on the past.”
“In the NBA, or pro sports, if a team is offering somebody something, the other team has a chance to match it and they know what they’re offering… (In college sports) you don’t know if you’re out bidding against yourself. You’re doing a best-guess estimate because you don’t know what the other schools are doing… I wish there was more transparency from everybody in college basketball.”
