Badly. So badly it went nearly sideways out of bounds and beelined towards an unsuspecting Cowboys cheerleader with her back to the field. Despite the heroic efforts of a sideline photographer, Aubrey’s kick accidentally drilled the cheerleader in the back of her head. Thankfully she appeared to be totally fine afterwards.

The Dallas Cowboys are staring down the barrel of a rather consequential offseason but had one more game to play before the 2024 season finished. And, true to form this year, they couldn’t escape without one more comical lowlight.

College of Marin freshman diver Ben Lentz won a pair of state championships this past weekend — 50 years since the last time the Mariners had a state champion in diving.

Lentz, a 19-year-old from Pleasanton, won gold in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events at the 3C2A Championships. Lentz, who is coached by Steve Carrera and Denis Bondarenko, scored a 262.85 to win the 3-meter event then did even better in the 1-meter event, putting up a 310.65 score.

Lentz’s 1-meter score was just seven points shy of the 3C2A record. COM hadn’t won a state championship in diving since 1975, when David Cotton was victorious in both events.

Archie Williams standout Jackson Richardson has accepted an offer to continue his playing career at UC Davis next season.

Richardson, who played for an MLS Next team, decided to play for the Peregrine Falcons as a senior this past season. Richardson was a key part of Archie Williams’ attacking front four, helping the Peregrine Falcons to an MCAL regular-season title, a North Coast Section title, and the program’s first NorCal championship.

The Aggies featured three Marin-based players on their roster last season with Jason Hsu (Terra Linda), Ensio Sardans (Redwood), and Zack Lillington (Archie Williams). UC Davis won the Big West Championship last season and made it to the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The top four seeds all advanced into the quarterfinals of the MCAL singles tournament on Monday. Tam’s Witt Bulger, Redwood’s Casra Afsharipour, Branson’s Chase Hoeveler, and Redwood’s Will Greenwald — Nos.1 through 4, respectively — won their first-round matches.

Redwood’s Julian Zhang and Cal Fazal had a bye into the doubles quarterfinals. Redwood’s Tug Ricordel and Liam Martinez (No. 2) and Branson’s Tommie Higgins and Leighton Fraser (No. 3) won their respective matches.

  • San Domenico’s Toby Sadzeck, the No. 2 seed, picked up a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Stuart Hall’s Teddy Morfit, the No. 3 seed, to win the BCL West singles tournament on Monday.

NCAA champion Asha Means transfers to Auburn from UNC for final season

AUBURN, Ala. — Asha Means, a senior forward who spent the previous four seasons at the University of North Carolina and captained the Tar Heels to the 2024 NCAA Championship, has joined the Auburn soccer program for her final season of eligibility, head coach James Armstrong announced.

“We are thrilled to add Asha’s leadership, experience and quality to our program,” Armstrong said. “The lessons she learned from being a captain on the reigning national championship team will be extremely beneficial to our program, on and off the field. I know she is excited for the opportunity to make an impact in her final collegiate season here on The Plains.”

Means saw minutes in various areas of the pitch over the course of her UNC career. Prior to the 2024 season, she was voted as one of three team captains. Over the course of the year, she appeared in 12 matches, ripping off six shots and placing five of them on frame.

The Charlotte, North Carolina native bagged her first career goal last fall against Louisville. After drawing a foul in the box, Means converted from the spot in the 84th minute to seal a 5-0 Tar Heels victory.

Prior to college, Means was named the 2021 North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year for her efforts with Charlotte Soccer Academy and Lake Norman Charter School. Means led LNCS to the 2021 2A state title and was voted Player of the Match after scoring a hat trick in the final. She went on to win the South Fork Conference Player of the Year Award after ending the season with 42 goals and 11 assists.

Casper College news release by Lisa S. Icenogle:

May classes through Casper College Community Education include Cobbler Cupcakes, Capturing Spring in Sketches, Inmigracion Basada en la Familia, Range Safety and Pistol Marksmanship, Rotary Park Ecosystems, and more.

“May learning always flourish — let’s dive into learning for fun with community education classes at Casper College,” said Zhanna Gallegos, community education coordinator at Casper College.

You’ll enjoy the soft texture of cupcakes and the fruit flavors of cobblers in one dessert in Cobbler Cupcakes Saturday, May 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Instructor Sara Pederson will show students tips and tricks for baking delectable cupcakes and creating flawless whipped icing, discuss how to make a fruit compote, cinnamon swirl cupcakes with a cobbler-like top, how to modify cobbler cupcakes using any seasonal fruit, whip up a deliciously light topping that compliments any dessert, and more. Supplies are provided for Cobbler Cupcakes.

Enjoy a drawing experience that immerses you in the beauty of spring’s renewal with Capturing Spring in Sketches. Students will pause to observe the vibrant rebirth of flora and fauna and learn to see natural materials’ shapes, sizes, textures, and colors as they capture these details in their sketchbooks, bringing the season’s essence to life. Instructor Sara Bohl will email the supply list before the first class. The second and third classes will meet on location. Suitable for all levels, Capturing Spring in Sketches will run on Wednesday evenings from 6-7:30, May 14 through 28.

Inmigracion Basada en la Familia or Family-based Immigration will be taught by Mary Longart and Christine Jordan on Saturday, May 15, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Translated: A lot is at stake when bringing a family together. Discover how and when the U.S. immigration system allows a parent, spouse, or child to immigrate to the United States. Review the Petition for Alien Relative form and discuss the process of petitioning for a family member located within the country or abroad. Bring note-taking materials.

Range Safety and Pistol Marksmanship will provide a relaxed classroom setting to learn the various aspects of range safety before visiting a local shooting range. Instructor Eric Ramsey, certified pistol, shotgun, and carbine rifle law enforcement professional, will discuss basic firearm safety and pistol marksmanship. Students should bring a modern, unloaded, current production pistol in their desired caliber or a semiautomatic gun, as well as ammunition or magazines. Firearms must be in a secure pistol container or a zippered gun rug with ammunition and magazines stored separately. Ear protection, eye protection, and a safety check before class are required. Targets and other range equipment will be provided. The class is for those 18 and older, and an ID is required. Range Safety and Pistol Marksmanship will run Thursday and Friday, May 22 and 23, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 24, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Finally, learn about Rotary Park’s unique environment and diverse ecosystems. Then, venture onto a guided hike, examining flora and fauna in mountain meadows and ponderosa pine forests in higher elevation points of the Bridle Trail in Rotary Park Ecosystems, taught by Joanne Theobald. According to Theobald, the trail is steep in spots, narrow, and sometimes uneven, so bring walking sticks if you have them, as well as water and lunch for this one-day class that will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 31.

“Built Wild,” the Ford Bronco Makes a Helluva Comeback

The idea of the Ford Bronco was born in the Early Sixties to compete with Jeep. These iconic off-road SUVS are still recognized for their simple, boxy design. Over time, the demand for Broncos dropped off, but in the last 25 years, they’ve regained a lot of traction. The no-frills, off-road vehicles are just plain cool. Today a well-maintained 1980s Ford Bronco ranges from around $14,667 to $24,800 depending on the model, condition, and features.

FC Tucson opened its 2025 season the way they have for a couple of years: a tune-up match against Selección Tucsón, a team of standout Southern Arizona players. The match at Kino North Stadium went well for FC Tucson, but they were unable to staunch a comeback by the scrappy amateurs and settled for a 2 – 2 draw.

“We let them stay in the game for too long,” said FC Tucson coach Sebastian Pineda.

The first half was dominated by FC Tucson, with the only two early advances coming from the feet of former Real Salt Lake player Donny Toia. However, the one-time professional went down after charging for loose ball in minute 22 and had to get subbed out early.

By that time, FC Tucson had already built up a strong lead. In minute 11, Alexis Ledoux, who had already been a menace in Selección Tucsón’s box, dished the ball off to Pima College player Robert Castaneda who slotted it past Selección keeper John Suarez. Castaneda scored again in minute 19.

FC Tucson tried to extend the lead with shots before the hour mark. Sebastian Guzman had an attempt from distance when he caught the keeper out, but it sailed harmlessly over the crossbar. An attempt by Juan Galves to dribble into shooting position was broken up by a surprisingly well-organized defense.

As the match went into the final frame, things started to fall apart for FC Tucson. Selección’s chippy play eventually made FC Tucson’s players reciprocate.

Both Casteneda and midfielder Frank Castro got yellow cards for fouls. With pride on the line, Selección played with a bit more urgency that FC Tucson and found more chances on FC Tucson goalkeeper José Ortiz, who came on as a sub around the hour mark.

Antonio Morales, a Pueblo Warrior, found the back of the net in minute 82. Only moments later, the team earned a penalty kick that Ricardo Flores sent just past Ortiz’s fingers.

FC Tucson would have to settle for a draw despite dominating most of the match. After the match, Selección coach Ivan Jiménez admitted that it took a while to adjust to the athleticism of FC Tucson’s players, but they were motivated.

“It was just hard work,” he said. “They really wanted this. The last two years they lost. These boys wanted to show they can play with the best.”

FC Tucson coach Sebastian Pineda admitted that a few missed chances early and mistakes near the end allowed Selección to earn the draw. He also noted that the team isn’t quite complete yet, with the first match not coming until the 20th.

“The guys are just getting in town; they don’t know each other well yet,” he said. “We’ve got some local guys and we were thankful that they helped us. We want the experienced players to come out and slow the game down and not give away the ball so quickly, those little details that experience gives you. That wasn’t there today. We finished with a very young team.”

One of those local players that filled the roster was Robert Castaneda. As a fill-in player, he is not expected to be on the full roster when league matches begin, but it’s hard to see a player that scored two goals not be considered.

“I knew about Robert since he was at Pima, that’s why I brought him in for training,” Pineda said. “He’s putting himself out there, and he’ll get a chance to prove himself.”

Castaneda’s partner in the offense was Alexis Ledoux, a French forward who earned the assist on the first goal. Ledoux just got done with his last season at UC Santa Barbara where he scored 14 goals for the Gauchos. He brings the experience Pineda was talking about, with time at academies in France before playing college soccer in the US.

“Ultimately, my role is to help the team score goals. That means I have to find spaces and help the team get chances,” he said. “I think I did that today, but I could finish better.”

The 5′ 6″ forward was a target for the more physical play of Selección’s back line, an indicator of how dangerous they knew he was. He’s gotten used to this.

“I’ve always been one of the smallest players on the field,” he said. “I’m always getting kicked around. I usually get fouls from those and that creates chances. It’s part of my game.”

FC Tucson’s first league match is away against Stars FC with their first home game coming on May 24 against Redlands FC.
