With their slim edge over the Coyotes, the Bulldogs gained the top-seed in Class 4A Division 1 from the district in the playoffs and a bi-district match against the San Antonio Memorial Minutemen, while the Coyotes wound up with their bi-district match against La Vernia.
A story on the match will appear in the March 30 edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.
On Feb. 14, they suffered a 2-1 road loss against the San Antonio Cole Cougars, but they avenged that loss with a March 11 win, 3-1, over the Cougars in the rematch played in La Vernia.
Uvaldeans Luis De La Cruz Reyna (No. 10) and Diego Granados (No. 11) came close, but it was their teammate, Lino Rodriguez (No. 7), who made head contact with the ball, while Diego Marin (No. 9) looked on. Talon Gonzales scored the lone goal in that game.
“In our final two district matches, we played two good teams in Floresville and Somerset,’ said Menchaca. “Hopefully those final two matches will have prepared some for playing against a very good La Vernia ball club.”
Prior to Uvalde’s loss to Floresville, the Coyotes won a 1-0 victory over the Somerset Bulldogs.
The Coyotes finished district play with the same district record, 9-3, as the Somerset Bulldogs.
They lost only one out of 14 district matches.
Though they narrowly finished third behind Somerset in the standings, the Coyotes were the only district team to score on Floresville. They scored one goal in each of the two matches against the Tigers.
Uvalde High School won a coin flip with La Vernia to gain the home field site for the match.
Floresville scored near the midway point of the second half and held off the Coyotes the rest of the way to finish the season with an unblemished district record.
Floresville was to play Gonzales in Class 4A Division II, while Pleasanton was to play San Antonio Cole in the other bi-district matches.
Floresville scored their first goal of the match with under one minute to go in the first half.
The Uvalde-La Vernia bi-district winner will advance to play the bi-district winner between the Austin Northeast Early College Raiders and the Marble Falls Mustangs in the second round of the post-season playoffs.
La Vernia, 16-4-2, for the season, went into the Uvalde bi-district match sporting a seven-match winning streak.
Uvalde and Somerset split their head-to-head district matches, but the Bulldogs had an advantage in goal scores in those games.
The Tigers added to their lead with a goal early in the second half.
“La Vernia is much like Floresville. They are very talented. The Bears dominated play in their district and pretty much ran away with the district title,” said Coach Menchaca.
Coach George Menchaca’s Coyotes, 11-7-1 for the season, entered play against La Vernia following a 3-1 loss against the District 28-4A champion Floresville Tigers at the UHS soccer field on March 14.
Floresville outscored district teams, 61-2.
The Bears outscored their District 27-4A opponents, 80-12.
Uvalde cut the scoring deficit to 2-1 with 28:23 left in the second half after a successful penalty kick made by Lino Rodriguez.
