Cal State Fullerton women’s water polo’s season came to an end Friday morning after a 16-6 loss to No. 1 seed Hawai’i in the first round of the Big West Championship.
This was the third matchup against the Rainbow Wahine this season, with Hawai’i outscoring CSUF 49-14 in their three wins.
“If we’re in the middle of the Big West, we’re ranked No. 10 in the country,” said head coach Kyle Witt. “Our conference is frickin’ tough.”
Senior Hannah Wilson led the team with two goals in her final game as a Titan, while Destiny Hernandez, Taylor Mason, Emme Doube-MacLeod and Tess Henke also found the back of the net. With senior starting goalkeeper Annabelle Sherman out, Sienna Bertsch stepped in for the first quarter, and Alexandra Ortiz took over for the remainder of the game, making six saves.
Hawai’i took control early, jumping to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. The Titans’ defense held strong for most of the second quarter, but Hawai’i extended their lead before Henke scored CSUF’s first goal with 1:21 left in the half, making it 5-1 at the break.
Wilson opened the third quarter with a goal, cutting the deficit to 5-2. However, Hawai’i responded with a scoring run to pull away. Double-MacLeod capitalized on a power play opportunity to bring the score to 8-3, but Hawai’i’s offense proved too much, ending the third quarter up 11-3.
The Rainbow Wahines’ duo of Ema Vernoux and Jordan Wedderburn, who have both competed at the Olympic level, scored five goals and combined for six points in the win. The duo is third and seventh in the Big West in goals scored, combining for 137.
Hawai’i’s depth and efficiency proved to be too much for the Titans to handle.
CSUF finished the season with an 11-21 record, including playing nearly every game away from home at the Fullerton College Pool due to pool repairs at Titan Aquatics Center.
The freshman class of Bertsch, Jade Lonzo, Doube-MacLeod, Mia Hatch, Elise Bliss and Ileina Hatori all contributed this season and will lead the Titans’ future against the competitive Big West.
