COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Incoming freshman opposite/outside hitter Charlotte Vinson was named among 18 athletes on the 2025 Girls USA U19 National Team, as announced by USA Volleyball on Monday (April 28) afternoon. She was one of seven pin hitters selected.
 
This group of players have been selected as the preliminary roster for this summer’s FIVB Girls U19 World Championships in Croatia and Serbia. After the initial training block, a final group of 12 players will be picked to represent Team USA in its title defense this summer.
 
Vinson will be making her debut with Team USA after spending many years in the national team youth development program. The Yorktown, Indiana native has had a journey that’s been well documented over the years. She overcame a life-threatening illness during her junior year of high school but has made a full recovery during her final season of club volleyball.
 
She will head to Colorado Springs for the first training block with the team during the first week of June. From there, a group of 12 players will be selected to head to Europe. That crop of athletes will have a second training block in the Netherlands before the U19 World Championships in July.
 
Vinson, the 2024 Indiana Ms. Volleyball, was a consensus top-25 recruit by both Prep Volleyball and Prep Dig. She is joined in an elite class by the likes of outside hitter Jaidyn Jager (Carlsbad, Calif.) and middle blocker Victoria Gray (Temperance, Mich). IU’s entire freshman class will report to campus this summer.
 
Team USA is in Pool C along with Turkey, Bulgaria, Poland, Peru and Spain in the 24-team tournament this summer. It won the last iteration of the tournament in 2023 with a 3-2 win over Turkey in the final. Former IU outside hitter Mady Saris (Canada) played in the 2019 tournament in Egypt.

HONOLULU — One year ago, the Hawaii water polo team’s run to the national semifinals ended in frustrating fashion at the hands of California.

The Rainbow Wahine earned the opportunity to get back to that point and pick up some payback in the process.

UH, just a few hours after arriving back in the islands from their successful trip to Irvine, Calif., for the Big West tournament title and automatic NCAA Tournament berth, took in the national selection show from the Manoa Lower Campus and learned their placement in the nine-team Indianapolis, Ind., bracket.

First-year head coach James Robinson and his mix of veterans and precocious youngsters were seeded fourth, which drew some polite applause. Then they learned they were matched up with Cal, and some murmuring ensued.

“This is where we wanted to be,” Robinson said of his team’s seeding. “It’s awesome that we’re here now. It’s not where we want to finish, right?”

UH was the second seed in Maureen Cole’s final season when it lost 9-6 to Cal in the program’s first NCAA semifinal appearance since 2013, in which the Wahine converted only two of 17 power play opportunities.

“I don’t think that’s a game that we will forget,” said sophomore goalkeeper Daisy Logtens, who was just named Big West tournament Most Valuable Player for recording 14 saves in the final against Long Beach State. “But yeah, it’s nice to play them again. Try and get revenge, obviously.”

The Wahine got a smaller measure of payback by edging Cal 12-11 in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational in Irvine, Calif., on Feb. 22.

UH (21-4) also had a marquee win over UCLA on its resume from the same early-season event.

The Golden Bears (19-5) have proven they compile goals in bunches, failing to reach double digits on the scoreboard only three times in 24 matches. They lost to top-ranked UCLA by only a goal in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation semifinals and then beat No. 2 USC by a goal in the conference third-place game.

UH has succeeded by leaning into its defense and counterattacking ability. It held opponents to fewer than 10 goals 16 times.

Stanford was the No. 1 seed, UCLA the 2 and USC the 3. Those three schools have combined for all the NCAA women’s water polo championships.

Should UH get past Cal at IUPUI’s IU Natatorium, it is almost certainly looking at a semifinal matchup with Stanford (22-1). The Cardinal will play the winner of a May 7 play-in game between Wagner (21-8) and McKendree (21-7).

“It takes trusting in the process of what we’ve done this whole the whole fall, the whole semester, the whole season,” said senior Jordan Wedderburn, “and just trusting in James, trusting in each other, and trusting in everything that we’ve done and everything that we’ve built together. Just having faith that in the end, everyone’s going to give it their all.”

Hiram College is seeking applications for the position of Cross Country/Track and Field – Jumps and Multi-Event Graduate Assistant. Hiram College is a private liberal arts institution located in northeast Ohio. The college is a member of the Presidents Athletic Conference and NCAA Division III.

The Graduate Assistant for Cross Country/Track and Field – Jumps and Multi-Event Coach position is a 10-month position which reports to the Head Cross Country/Track and Field Coach and Director of Athletics. The graduate assistant coach is responsible for: assisting with on-field coaching and with the organization and implementation of a successful recruiting and retention plan for the program, possibly supervising student coaches and/or managers, supporting the strength and conditioning program, representing the program in accordance with department/college policies and procedures, and acting in accord with PAC, NCAA and institutional rules and regulations. Other administrative duties in the athletic department may be assigned, such as support of event management for other sports when not in the traditional competitive season for the Track and Field program. Candidates must be accepted to the Hiram College Master’s program in order to be considered for this position and must continue to progress toward a master’s degree completion during the appointment period.

BIRMINGHAM – For the third time in the 2025 season, UAB right-handed pitcher Colin Daniel has won American Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

The junior from Corner, Alabama tossed a complete game shutout on Friday night against Rice. Daniel struck out a career-high 13 batters, did not allow a walk or a run, and had a strike percentage of 73%. Daniel now ranks 3rd in the American Conference in Innings Pitched (68.2), 3rd in Walks Allowed (12), tied for 7th in Wins (5), 8th in ERA (3.80), and 8th in Strikeouts (62).

The CIF-SS boys volleyball and lacrosse playoffs begin this week, while the girls beach volleyball season rolls on with quarterfinal matchups.

San Marcos and Santa Barbara High are the last local teams standing in the CIF-SS beach volleyball postseason brackets.

The Royals will hit the road to take on Redondo Union on Tuesday at 2 p.m. for the Div. 1 quarterfinals. San Marcos defeated Oaks Christian, 3-2, in the first-round matchup.

“All eight of the teams still in the division are ranked in the top 25 nationally,” San Marcos head coach Tim Loomer said. “We played [Redondo Union] a couple of weeks ago and lost, but we were really competitive. So we have an opportunity and it’s going to be great.”

Meanwhile, the Dons will host Long Beach Wilson on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at East Beach in the Div. 2 quarterfinals. Santa Barbara has defeated Foothill Tech (5-0) and St. Joseph of Lakewood (3-2) so far.

On the indoor court, six local squads will begin their quest for a CIF-SS title this week.

The Channel League champion San Marcos Royals will host Claremont for the Div. 3 opener on Tuesday inside the Thunderhut. Meanwhile, the Tri-Valley League champion Bishop Diego Cardinals will be on the road against Wiseburn DaVinci on Tuesday.

“We hope to have a good run,” San Marcos head coach Dave Goss said.

In Div. 4, Santa Barbara High will host Elsinore on Wednesday at 6 p.m. inside J.R. Richards Gym. Carpinteria High, slotted into Div. 8, will also begin the playoffs at home against Los Amigos on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Laguna Blanca will head down to take on Ramona High on Wednesday at 6 p.m. for the Div. 6 playoff opener.

Dos Pueblos earned a first-round bye in Div. 4 and will await the winner of Fontana or Westminster, who the Chargers will host on Saturday at 6 p.m. inside Sovine Gym.

As for lacrosse, there will be three local girls teams and three local boys teams vying for a CIF-SS championship.

After an undefeated regular season, Dos Pueblos will look to keep it rolling with a home matchup against either El Segundo or Orange Lutheran in the second round of the Div. 2 bracket on Friday at 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, in the Div. 3 playoffs, Santa Barbara High will host Woodbridge and Cate will be on the road against Millikan. Both games are set for Monday at 5 p.m.

On the girls side, San Marcos is fresh off its second straight Channel League title and will welcome Laguna Beach to Warkentin Stadium for the Div. 2 opener on Monday at 5 p.m.

On Tuesday at 5 p.m., Dos Pueblos and Cate will begin the Div. 3 playoff bracket. The Rams are on the road against Beckman, while the Chargers will host Paloma Valley.

Track & Field, Swim League Championship Week

While most sports are entering their first playoff matchups, the local track & field and swim teams will compete in their respective league championship meets this week.

On the track, San Marcos, Santa Barbara High and Dos Pueblos will head down to Ventura to compete in the Channel League championship meet on Thursday.

“It’s a great venue and a great place to compete. Usually there’s some big marks there,” Santa Barbara High head coach Olivia Perdices said. “Channel League is always a dogfight in every event, so we’re looking forward to having some fun with San Marcos, DP and the rest of the league down there.”

The Royals’ boys team is fresh off a Santa Barbara County title, while the Chargers placed in the top three in both the boys and girls meets.

Carpinteria High will host this year’s Citrus Coast League Track & Field championship meet on Thursday at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium. The Warrior girls will look to make some noise, as they went a perfect 6-0 in the regular season.

Bishop Diego track & field will compete in their league finals on Friday at Ventura College.

In the pool, San Marcos will host the Channel League Championship meet, with prelims beginning on Tuesday and the finals taking place on Thursday.

Carpinteria High will begin the Citrus Coast League championship meet with prelims on Tuesday at Hueneme High.
