ROCKINGHAM — Richmond Senior High School Athletic Director James Johnson took a chair Saturday night in effort to raise money for the school’s baseball program.
Johnson accompanied El Maximo to the ring in the second match of Deck the Jaws, a fundraiser put on by local wrestling promotion World Class Elite Wrestling, in a non-title bout against Johnny Smooth, a member of the Team Pitbull faction.
Team Pitbull’s Baron Bullard was attempting to interfere in the match, but Johnson stepped up to stop him — catching a chair to the gut and then to the back, with Smooth getting the win.
The first of the two main events of the evening featured a showdown between former New Breed tag-team partners Tripp Cautious and Trey Walker.
Walker initially was declared the winner after a second referee was called in when the first was incapacitated. However, the original ref disqualified Walker and Cautious kept his heavyweight title.
The final match was a six-man tag match with former WWE star Heath Slater teaming with Richmond Senior grad Pony Johnson and Hangtyme defeating Team Pitbull’s Bullard and Tre G who were joined by former ECW wrestler C.W. Anderson.
The card opened with an eight-man ladder match for the WCEW New Class title, with Kydd Kysh securing the belt.
Other matches included:
- Former NWA, WCW and WWF wrestler George South defeating Chris Kaos.
- Ryleigh Rose winning a submission match against C.C. Young after Johnny Badger literally threw in the towel for Young.
- The Close Quarter Wrecking Crew (Scotty Matthews and Bobby Wohlfert) winning the WCEW tag titles from Big Von and stand-in partner GameTime Zay.
- The Dawson Brothers beating Sean Cruise and Adam Davis in a non-title tag match.
“This fundraiser is huge for us,” said head coach Eric Brown. “It supports us a great deal financially so we can continue to strive to achieve our goal of providing the best high school baseball experience possible for our athletes.
“It’s also special because it allows us to support a home grown organization within our community,” Brown added. “The WCEW staff and wrestlers work tirelessly to put on great shows throughout the year in our community.”

WCEW previously donated $3,000 to the baseball program with its Grand Slam event in May.

The promotion, run by William Mercer and Trey Webb, has also raised money for Richmond County Crime Stoppers and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office’s Shop with a Deputy program.
Another local promotion, Atlantic Coast Wrestling, held a fundraiser earlier this year for the Silvertip Hunt Club’s annual Special Forces/Wounded Warriors hunting trip.
Several of the wrestlers on Saturday had performed the night before in a fundraiser for the Rowland Police Department’s Shop with a Cop program for another promotion.
Mercer told the RO that a check presentation is planned for January.
“If you haven’t been to one of these events, find some time to go check these guys and girls out, they put on a great, first-class show,” said Brown. “We are very appreciative of World Class Elite Wrestling!”
