With the Xfinity Series off this weekend, Cole Custer carried the banner for the Haas Factory team during Cup Series racing at the 2-mile Michigan International Speedway. Making his sixth Cup Series start at Michigan, Custer rolled off 24th on Sunday.
41 Cole Custer – Recap
Early in Stage One, Custer was faced with challenges, reporting that his No. 41 Ford was loose on entry and exit, with a hint of tightness in the center of the corners. The handling made it difficult to get back to the throttle quickly off the turns. Still, Custer and the team were undeterred. As Stage One ended the team worked to dial in the HaasTooling.com Ford. Adjustments, including a round of wedge, were made to help improve stability, and give Custer the ability to attack the turns.
As Stage Two began, Custer worked to overcome adversity, He found restarts especially challenging, due to a lack of grip while trying to re-enter the throttle zone. He described the car as being “out of the track” with minimal grip, though he noted the balance itself wasn’t far off – just lacking overall feel. Unfortunately, just as the team looked to regroup and regain track position, Custer was caught in a multi-car incident on lap 68. The crash ended Custer’s day early and brought a premature close to what had been a determined effort. Custer was officially credited with a 35th-place finish.
“I don’t exactly know what transpired to get us into that situation but it just seemed like we all just ran out of room,” said Custer. It’s really disappointing from the standpoint of we want to be on the up end of things with our team right now. We want to move in the right direction in the summer time. I like we are bringing better cars to the racetrack and getting more competitive but getting wrecked on days like this, definitely sets that back.”

Carson Hocevar fined for making insensitive comments about Mexico

Spire Motorsports has taken action against its own driver, Carson Hocevar. The NASCAR Cup Series competed in Mexico City for the first time last weekend in an event that was positively received by most of the garage.
But while the 22-year-old rising star was live-streaming on Twitch, Hocevar chose to refer to Mexico as a “s***hole” in comments that received immediate pushback. Hocevar apologized for the comment after the race on Sunday night, but the team later chose to launch an internal review of the incident.

As a result, the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year has been fined $50,000 and must now complete mandatory cultural-sensitivity and bias-awareness training. The money will be split between three Mexican charities, including Cruz Roja Mexicana (Mexican Red Cross), Un Kilo de Ayuda (a nonprofit combating childhood malnutrition and supporting early-childhood development in rural communities), and Fondo Unido México (funding local NGOs that improve education, health, and housing).
Spire Motorsports statement
The team released a statement as well, explaining the decision to penalize their own driver: “These actions are consistent with Spire Motorsports’ core value of RESPECT, which is something we proudly display on every race car, team uniform, trackside hauler, and digital channel. Respect is not a slogan. It is a daily expectation that we “walk the walk” in how we speak, compete, and serve the communities that welcome our sport.
“Carson Hocevar’s recent comments made during the livestream fell short of that standard. They did not represent the views of Spire Motorsports, our partners, or NASCAR. He has acknowledged his mistake publicly, and his prompt, sincere apology demonstrated personal accountability. We now take this additional step to underscore that words carry weight, and respect must be lived out loud.

“Spire Motorsports has informed NASCAR of these penalties, and NASCAR has confirmed that our team-imposed discipline satisfies the sanctioning body’s requirements. Together we remain committed to showcasing NASCAR’s global growth, celebrating the passionate Mexican fanbase we experienced firsthand last weekend, and ensuring every member of our organization treats hosts, competitors, and communities with dignity.
“We look forward to turning the page by racing hard, representing our partners, and living our values on and off the track.”
Carson Hocevar apology
Hocevar, who had a run-in with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. during the race, which led to a post-race confrontation, released the following statement before the penalties were even announced:
“Maybe a kid that had never been out of the country until Thursday should ever give an opinion about what any place is like other than Portage, Michigan. When I answered that question on a stream, I was skeptical about the trip so far and believed everything I read or heard about Mexico City from people who more than likely also had never been here.
“Now that I’ve actually left my hotel a couple times and raced here in front of some of the most passionate fans I’ve ever seen, my opinion has changed. I am embarrassed by my comments, by the race I ran, and I may have to move here to hide out from Ricky [Stenhouse] anyway (referring to incident with the driver of the #47 car)
“Count this as another lesson for me in a season I’ve learned so much. Don’t believe everything you hear without seeing it yourself. If anyone should give anyone or any place the benefit of the doubt it’s me. I’m sorry Mexico City. Consider me an ally going forward and an example of getting off Twitch and seeing things with my own two eyes.”
NASCAR is unlikely to to issue any penalties of their own as the team worked in “close consultation” with the sanctioning body before making this decision.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Spire Motorsports fined Carson Hocevar $50,000 on Tuesday for derogatory comments he made about Mexico City on a live stream as NASCAR raced there last weekend.
Hocevar walked back the comments Sunday night with an apology and the 22-year-old admitted it was the first time he’d ever been outside the United States and believed all the negative things he’d read and heard about Mexico City.
“I am embarrassed by my comments,” he posted in a lengthy apology.
Spire also ordered Hocevar to attend cultural-sensitivity and bias-awareness training.
Spire said the $50,000 fine will be donated in equal portions to three organizations that serve Mexican communities:
Cruz Roja Mexicana (Mexican Red Cross).
Un Kilo de Ayuda, a nonprofit combating childhood malnutrition and supporting early-childhood development in rural communities.
Fondo Unido México (United Way Mexico), which funds local NGOs that improve education, health, and housing in 22 Mexican states.
“These actions are consistent with Spire Motorsports’ core value of RESPECT, which is something we proudly display on every race car, team uniform, trackside hauler, and digital channel,” the team said in a statement. “Respect is not a slogan. Strong WWTR Race Draws Myles Rowe Closer to Elusive First Win

The second year for Myles Rowe in INDY NXT by Firestone is turning into a breakout season of consistency, determination and growth.
Those traits have catapulted him from a mid-pack rookie to a legitimate contender for victories.
The progress is evident. 2023 USF Pro 2000 champion Rowe delivered his best career INDY NXT finish by placing second last Sunday at World Wide Technology Raceway.
“Grateful to be on the podium,” Rowe said. “For sure, I wanted a little bit more, but Lochie (Hughes) came on quite surprisingly in the end.”
Starting fourth in the No. 99 ABEL/Force Indy machine, Rowe wasted no time asserting himself, moving into third on Lap 1. The Georgia native maintained third position for the first 59 laps before eventual race winner Lochie Hughes passed him when his No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship car came alive while racing on a higher line on the 1.25-mile oval than the front-runners.
As Hughes climbed toward the lead, pole winner Caio Collet and points leader Dennis Hauger faded. The duo leaped out to a wide advantage but used too much of their Firestone Firehawk Racing Tires in that effort.
Hughes pounced. Rowe followed.
Rowe passed Hauger for third on Lap 65, then Collet for second three laps later.
He chased Hughes for the final seven laps but couldn’t catch him, finishing 4.3521 seconds back.
“He (Hughes) could make the high line work, especially in (Turns) 3-4, which was the hardest part of the track to make that high line work,” Rowe said. “With it naturally being a flat-out corner, being able to stay up there and keep your foot in it is very important. We were struggling with that.
“Looked like Lochie could do a bit better. He deservedly had the win. I’m so pleased.”
Rowe’s ability to adapt and capitalize on the missteps of front-runners like Hauger and Collet shows a level of racecraft that signals he’s ready for the next step – victory lane.
He emerged as a serious contender this season after a solid rookie season with HMD Motorsports in which he finished 11th in points. His move to ABEL Motorsports this offseason sparked a upswing in form. He is fourth in the standings, 87 points behind leader Hauger.
Rowe has recorded five top-four finishes in six starts, including three podiums in the last four. His consistency marks a sharp contrast to 2024, when his best result was fourth on the streets of Detroit, with just one additional top-five finish coming in Race 1 of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course weekend.
He opened 2025 by tying his career-best fourth-place result in St. Petersburg and repeating it the next race at Barber Motorsports Park. Rowe then broke new ground with back-to-back third-place finishes during the IMS road course doubleheader in May.
Adversity struck June 1 at Detroit with a first-lap incident, leaving him with an 18th-place result. His ability to rebound from the Detroit setback with a podium at WWTR is a testament to the mental fortitude that separates elite drivers from good ones.
Rowe gained seven points on Hauger last weekend, and his measured driving approach and increasing confidence make him a top candidate to become the next new winner in INDY NXT by Firestone. The next race is this Sunday, June 22 at Road America (11 a.m. ET, FS1, FOX Sports app and INDYCAR Radio Network).
He already made history by becoming the first African American driver to win a race in the USF2000 Championship, reaching victory lane at New Jersey Motorsports Park in 2021. Rowe climbed to USF Pro 2000 with Pabst Racing in 2023 and renewed support from Force Indy. He became the first African American driver to win a North American open-wheel championship.
The strong start to the 2025 season adds to his intense desire of becoming the first African American INDY NXT winner.
“Pressure makes diamonds, and I’m sure we’ll shine,” he said.

A stout weekend at Knoxville Raceway showcased a return to Victory Lane for Big Game Motorsports.
David Gravel advanced from eighth to win the opening night of a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series doubleheader at the half-mile oval last Friday. It marked the team’s ninth triumph of the season.
Gravel was fifth quickest in his group during time trials before he advanced from third to second place in a heat race. That earned a spot in the dash and Gravel finished eighth to line up on the outside of the fourth row in the main event.
After quickly rocketing into the top five, Gravel methodically worked his way into the runner-up position before taking the lead on Lap 20. He pulled away in the closing laps to secure his 112 th career World of Outlaws win.
“I felt really good,” he said in a post-race interview on DIRTVision. “From Lap 5 to Lap 20 I felt awesome. In the beginning I was alright, and at the end I was feeling a little weird, but we were the best car there for 15 or 20 laps by far. We could move around, charge the corner hard on the bottom and carry speed. I’ve got to thank Cody (Jacobs), Zach (Patterson), and Pete (Stephens) and Scott (Vogelsong) this week for helping us out.”
Gravel was strong on Saturday as well. He timed in second quickest in his group and won a heat race. A sixth-place result in the dash started him on the outside of the third row in the A Main. Gravel’s car got stronger as the race went on and in the last 10 laps he advanced to second and closed on the leader. Gravel went for a last-ditch slide job in turns three and four, but was forced to check up to avoid contact. His second-place showing marked the team’s 20 th podium in 33 races this season.
“I felt really good,” he said in a post-race interview on DIRTVision. “I tried running the bottom a few times, and one time it really cost me a lot of time. Those last 10 laps I could really carry some speed through the corner. I wish I could take a couple laps back and gain some of that time back. Obviously, we had the fastest race car there at the end. These guys continue to give me fast race cars every single night, and it’s my job to get the win.”
Gravel used the strong weekend to build his lead in the World of Outlaws championship standings to 176 points.
Focus shifts to a home week for the team with Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, S.D., hosting the $100,000-to-win Huset’s Hustle on Wednesday and Thursday followed by the $250,000-to-win BillionAuto.com Huset’s High Bank Nationals presented by Menards on Friday and Saturday.
Gravel won the then-record quarter-million payday at the track in 2023.
