DiBenedetto rebuilding his career in Xfinity Series – Scranton Times-Tribune

LONG POND — Things were going well for Matt DiBenedetto five years ago. He was driving full time in the NASCAR Cup Series and qualified for the 2020 playoffs.
Then, it all came apart. He lost his ride with Wood Brothers Racing at the end of the 2021 season.
Since then, the 33-year-old driver from California has been working his way back. He finds himself in the Xfinity Series with independent Viking Motorsports. He will be behind the wheel of the No. 99 Chevrolet on Saturday in the 10th annual Explore the Pocono Mountains 250 at Pocono Raceway. His car is being sponsored by the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau.
Viking Motorsports and DiBenedetto appear to be the perfect fit for each other. The team is building in its first season on its own after getting help last season in an alliance with Ryan Sieg Racing. The driver provides talent and experience while starting his career over.
DiBenedetto admits being a bit humbled when he lost his Cup Series ride.
“Sometimes when you get stripped of things in life, you get a lot of clarity and you learn to appreciate the things you forget to appreciate,” he said.
“Today, I’m truly having more fun than I’ve ever had in my whole life and career. I appreciate it so much more and my faith journey has changed. I’ve had so much fun doing it and this team giving me this opportunity to build something together. I’m driving for such good people, I’m hoping to drive for this team for the remainder of my career, which hopefully is a long time.”
In seven seasons and 248 races in the Cup Series, DiBenedetto had nine top-five and 31 top-10 finishes. Three times he placed second — at Bristol in 2019 and both Las Vegas races in 2020.
After losing his ride with the Wood Brothers, he spent two seasons in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, making 43 starts with one win at Talladega in 2022.
Last year, DiBenedetto was recommended to Viking Motorsports owner Don Sackett as someone who could help the new team qualify for races and get its feet off the ground. His first race was at Richmond, six races into the Xfinity season. What started as ‘Let’s try this for five races’ turned into 10 races, which turned into the rest of the season. He posted three top-10 finishes.
Then, in January, DiBenedetto was announced as the team’s full-time driver for the 2025 campaign.
“After getting to know him (Sackett) in a short time, I was like, Man, I want to be a part of what this guy is building and be a part of his vision,” DiBenedetto said.
Through 15 races, DiBenedetto has a season-best finish of fifth at Talladega, along with four top-20s, including a 16th last week at Mexico City. There have been plenty of challenges and ups and downs such as moving its operation from Georgia to North Carolina and switching manufacturers from Ford to Chevrolet. But DiBenedetto likes the direction the team is moving.
“We’ve had our successes, our good runs, but we’ve also had DNFs or crazy circumstances bite us,” he said.
“But recently we’ve had a lot of very fast race cars where our speed is continuing to improve. We’re all meshing as a team, everything is starting to come together. We’re all synched up and unified, our communication is really good. I would expect the rest of the season to be a lot more speed and consistency than the first part of the year.”
Finishing in the top 20 in points would be a good accomplishment for the team. But DiBenedetto feels he can run consistently in the top 15 during the second half of the season. It wouldn’t even surprise him if he had a shot to win a race and qualify for the playoffs.
“That would be an extra bonus and total overachievement for the year,” DiBenedetto said. “But I’m not ruling that out, especially seeing the speed and confidence I’ve had. We’ve had fast, good, consistent race cars. Me and my crew chief Pat (Tryson) are really firing on all cylinders.
“I’m like a little kid in a candy store because I can see it all coming together. We’re going to be rockin’ and rollin’ the rest of this year.”
At Pocono, DiBenedetto ran 14 Cup races with his best finish being sixth in 2020. He also has two Truck Series starts and Saturday will be his third Xfinity start there.
“As a driver, coming here is one of my favorite places,” DiBenedetto said. “We always go to tracks that you can compare to somewhere else. Except for here. This is the only track we come to where it’s absolutely not comparable to anywhere else we go, which is what makes it fun. You’ve got three completely different, unique corners that present a lot of challenges, the racing is really fun. You’ve got to really plan ahead in the decision you make; you’ve got to be really calculated.”
Among the keys to success at Pocono, according to DiBenedetto, are a good qualifying effort, surviving the wild restarts and being able to get your car off Turn 3 well.
“It needs to turn and exit Turn 3 well because you’ve got a really, really long straightaway that it leads into,” he said. “If you’re not good off Turn 3, you’re going to struggle all day and struggle to pass.”
Practice for the Explore the Mountains 250 is 10 a.m. with qualifying to follow at 11:05 a.m. The race is scheduled to get the green flag at 3:40 p.m.
One interesting aspect for the race is Dale Earnhardt Jr. serving a crew chief for his team’s No. 88 Chevrolet and driver Connor Zilisch. Earnhardt is making his debut as crew chief while Mardy Lindley serves a one-race suspension for a missing lug nuts violation following the race at Nashville three weeks ago.
Also, Cup Series regular Chase Elliott is pulling double duty. He is driving the No. 17 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports. Elliott also ran the Xfinity race at Darlington in April and finished second.

Insider assesses the panic meter for 23XI in lawsuit vs. NASCAR
With 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports in danger of losing their charter status ahead of this Sunday’s race at Dover Motor Speedway, is it time for the teams to panic? With 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports in danger of losing their charter status ahead of this Sunday’s race at Dover Motor Speedway, is it time for the teams to panic? Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports says not yet.
Pockrass, appearing on “Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour” podcast, talked about the latest to come out from 23XI and FRM’s antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR. The NASCAR insider said that while things are “rocky,” it’s still too early to gauge which way the case will ultimately go.
“Right now, I would say things are a little rocky. But I don’t think it’s time to hit the panic button yet,” Pockrass said. “Both sides are still taking depositions, they’re getting all of their discovery done and I think it will be another couple months before you really get a feel of which way this case will go. If I’m a 23XI or Front Row fan, I’m just kind of crossing my fingers to get through the rest of this year with not too much drama and then see what happens in the offseason.”
Monday, 23XI and FRM filed another restraining order against NASCAR and a new preliminary injunction in order to save their charter status for the remainder of the 2025 season. The teams filed the restraining order and new preliminary injunction after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit denied the teams’ request to rehear their case after a three-judge panel overturned the preliminary injunction, which granted charter status to the teams throughout the duration of their lawsuit against NASCAR.
23XI and FRM could lose their chartered status on Wednesday. The teams wanted NASCAR to file a response by Tuesday afternoon. The judge gave NASCAR until 5 p.m. ET Wednesday to respond.
23XI, FRM have a lot to lose in lawsuit vs. NASCAR
Maintaining charter status is very important for the two teams, who refused to sign the Charter Agreement last September. Chartered teams have a guaranteed spot on the grid each week. Open teams must qualify on speed. Whereas chartered teams receive a portion of the revenue from NASCAR’s multi-billion-dollar media rights deal, open teams do not. Open teams earn far less money, and loss of charter status would compromise and void contracts with sponsors and drivers.
Some would argue that 23XI and FRM don’t have their charters now because they didn’t sign the agreement. Both teams acquired a charter from Stewart-Haas Racing — Pockrass questions what will happen to those as the legal battle continues.
“Some would say, ‘Do they have them at all,’ because they didn’t sign the agreement,” Pockrass said. “So, you could theorize that 23XI and Front Row don’t have charters anymore because they never signed the agreement for this season. I think the big question will be what happens with the charters that they each bought from Stewart-Haas. Do they get to keep those?
“I think right now, the feeling is when it comes to Dover, that both 23XI and Front Row will have three open cars apiece. What happens with that Stewart-Haas charter that each bought will kind of get determined by the courts down the road.”

FORT WORTH, Texas, July 16, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — SEGG Media Corporation, formerly Lottery.com Inc., (NASDAQ: SEGG, LTRYW) (“SEGG Media” or the “Company”), a leading technology company transforming the global intersection of sports, entertainment and gaming today announced a strategic investment into Veloce Media Group (“Veloce”), one of the fastest-scaling digital platforms operating at the intersection of sport, gaming, and content. The partnership will be managed by Sports.com, a division of SEGG Media.
The investment forms part of a broader buy-and-build strategy to position SEGG Media as the home of immersive sports and next-generation media. The transaction, which values Veloce at £40 million ($53 million USD) pre-money, will be completed in two tranches, with a call option enabling SEGG to reach majority ownership at 51%.
This move reinforces SEGG Media’s recent launch and the turnaround success of Lottery.com. It signals a new phase of high-growth strategic acquisitions centered around profitability, scale, and exciting global fan engagement.
A Cash-Generating, High-Growth Digital Asset
Veloce Media Group has built the world’s largest racing and gaming media network with more than 750 million monthly digital views and reaching a rapidly growing Gen-Z and millennial audience. In its most recent fiscal year ended March 2025, Veloce reported £12.8 million ($17.5 million USD) in revenue. Veloce has strong forward momentum following July 2025 acquisition of Quadrant, a disruptive motorsport content and lifestyle brand co-founded with Formula 1 driver Lando Norris.
The Veloce Group operates across:
- Competitive esports and sim racing (F1 Esports, Ferrari Global Series)
- Immersive content and athlete-led platforms
- Sustainable racing initiatives including FIA Extreme H World Cup
- Creator-led brands, merchandise, and digital fan engagement
The investment from the Company is funding key strategic initiatives, including Veloce’s acquisition of Quadrant, with £2 million ($2.6 million USD) committed in the first tranche. The remainder is scheduled for completion by end of July 2025.
Matthew McGahan, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of SEGG Media
“Since completing the turnaround of the Company, we identified two global sports verticals, motorsport and soccer, as cornerstones of our future strategy. This investment into Veloce is yet another tangible step into motorsport following the successful multi-race partnerships we secured with three rising stars in IndyCar and Indy NXT.
“With Veloce now in the family, we’re doubling down. We see this as a continuation of our expansion into motorsports, a sector that offers scale, global fanbases, commercial viability, and media storytelling potential across all levels of competition. From F1, IndyCar, MotoGP, to NASCAR and beyond, SEGG Media is positioning the Sports.com brand not just via sponsorship, but through content creation, team partnerships and immersive behind-the-scenes access.
“Our internal production arm, Sports.com Studios, is already developing original content formats that tap into this world and, now, with the energy and expertise of Veloce’s young leadership, we’re excited to explore that frontier together.”
Jack Clarke, Chief Strategy Officer of Veloce Media Group
“Veloce Media Group is uniquely positioned to engage a generation of digitally native sports fans. With SEGG Media’s support, we are well placed to scale our media and competitive operations while continuing to innovate.”
Majed Al Sorour, President of Sports.com, a division of SEGG Media (former Main Board Director of Newcastle United Football Club and CEO of LIV Golf)
“This investment marks a transformative opportunity for the region. Saudi Arabia is home to over 23 million gamers, representing nearly 70% of the population, and consistently ranks among the highest globally in daily gaming engagement. With major international events like Gamers8, the Esports World Cup and the upcoming Olympic Esports Games hosted in Riyadh, the Kingdom has rapidly become a global epicenter for esports and digital sport.

- Nascar averaging its lowest-ever viewership after 20 races
- IndyCar averaging 1.36m viewers so far in 2025
Nascar averaged 2.19 million viewers for its Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway on TNT.
This is a 24 per cent year-over-year (YoY) decrease in viewership compared to last year’s race, although the 2024 visit to Sonoma took place a few races earlier in the season on the main Fox channel.
The main TNT channel accounted for 1.97 million viewers, with an additional 224,000 viewers per minute on the truTV alternative telecast.
Nascar is now averaging 1.95 million viewers after three races on TNT, which is comparatively low for the Cup Series, though each race on the channel has averaged more viewers than the last. The channel is also providing Nascar with promising gains among younger demographics.
While there is no explicit figure provided, Nascar claims that viewers between the ages of 18 and 34 for last weekend’s race were up 29 per cent compared to last year’s Cup Series average on cable.
Much of this younger audience appears to be reached through the Bleacher Report and House of Highlights social platforms, which have generated 85 million views after three weeks. 73 per cent of the audience for these platforms is under 34 years old.
Nascar is also now 20 races into the 2025 season, which offers a good point of comparison for how it is tracking compared to previous campaigns. In short, Nascar has never seen audience averages this low at this stage of the season.
With no competition from Formula One last weekend, IndyCar will be disappointed to have delivered two of its lower audiences of the 2025 season.
The double-header weekend saw 576,000 viewers tune in for Saturday’s race, before Sunday delivered an audience of 719,000, both on the main Fox channel.
It is difficult to compare these figures to last year’s Saturday race as it averaged 72,000 viewers on CNBC after a late scheduling change. Sunday’s race, which aired on NBC in 2024, offers a much more standard comparison and shows that this year’s event saw a 17 per cent YoY decrease in viewership.
IndyCar is now averaging 1.36 million viewers after 12 races, by far its strongest performance since at least 2016 – although this figure has been significantly boosted by the largest Indianapolis 500 audience in 17 years.
Without the Indy 500, IndyCar is averaging just over 838,000 viewers, a far less favourable figure compared to previous seasons.
In fact, this trails average audiences at the same stage of the season in 2023 (907,400 viewers), 2022 (931,000 viewers) and 2021 (867,900 viewers).

Every NASCAR Cup win with Red Bull as the primary sponsor

Red Bull has an interesting history in NASCAR, entering the sport with a race team in the mid-2000s and attempting to form a championship-caliber organization. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out as well as their Formula 1 venture as Red Bull Racing’s NASCAR branch shut down at the conclusion of the 2011 season. Now, if you want to learn more about that tumultuous era, you can find the full rundown of that saga HERE.
But since then, the brand has disappeared from the sport for the most part. However, through Red Bull athletes Shane van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch, they re-entered NASCAR as a sponsor in 2025. We’ve now seen Red Bull-backed cars in various Cup races and even the Xfinity Series, supporting SVG and Zilisch.
When SVG dominated at Sonoma, he also put Red Bull back in Victory Lane at the highest level of stock car racing for the first time in nearly 14 years. And with this latest triumph, we thought it would be a good time to look at all of Red Bull’s wins in the Cup Series. Unlike F1, where they’ve collected over 100 race wins and eight drivers’ championships, Red Bull has seen limited success in NASCAR.
Win #1 — Brian Vickers — Michigan – August 16th, 2009

Red Bull first reached Victory Lane during the 2009 NASCAR Cup season with Brian Vickers, who was one of the team’s original drivers. Vickers earned pole position for the race in the No. 83 Toyota, and that was not a surprise as the No. 83 managed to win six poles that year. However, the checkered flag eluded them the first five times.
Despite starting from the front of the field, Vickers didn’t lead any laps until around the halfway point. Even then, he only led a total of 12 laps during the entire race. Jimmie Johnson was the dominant driver, leading 133 of 200 laps, but like Michigan often does, it came down to a fuel-mileage race. And with just three laps to go, Johnson ran out of fuel. That opened the door for Vickers to take the lead, and he was actually able to make the fuel last all the way to the checkered flag. It was his second career win, but of course, the first-ever for a Red Bull car in the Cup Series.
Win #2 — Kasey Kahne — Phoenix — November, 13th, 2011

Red Bull Racing had two races left before shutting down its NASCAR operation in 2011. Kasey Kahne was about to join Hendrick Motorsports, but before the end of this team, Kahne gave them one last moment of glory. Driving the No. 4 Toyota in the penultimate race of the 2011 playoffs, he played spoiler and stole the spotlight from the title contenders.
Kahne started the race in tenth and didn’t lead until the final run of the day. Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch were battling for the lead heading into the last round of pit stops, but Busch ended up out of fuel and stalled in his pit box, taking him out of contention. Kahne pitted about three laps before Edwards under green and used the undercut to get ahead. Kahne took the lead for the first time on Lap 299 of 312, all while Edwards desperately tried to run him down. He got within a second as the leaders dealt with traffic, but he ran out of time in the end. Kahne snapped an 80+ race winless streak for himself and gave Red Bull its last win as the primary sponsor of a Cup car for a very long time.
Win #3 — Shane van Gisbergen — Sonoma — July 13th, 2025

Shane van Gisbergen, Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet

Red Bull Racing is now long gone (in NASCAR), but Red Bull has returned as a sponsor with two drivers under contract to Trackhouse Racing. Their first race back in the Cup Series came with Zilisch’s Cup debut at COTA, but that ended in a crash. They’ve sponsored him in each of his three Cup starts so far with Zilisch placing as high as 11th. As for SVG, they adorned the No. 88 Chevrolet in two oval races so far. They also dabbled in the Xfinity Series, partnering with WeatherTech to share sponsorship for Zilisch and SVG in the Chicago race, scoring a 1-2 finish. But at Sonoma, they were with SVG in a Cup race at a road course for the very first time. With his recent triumphs in Mexico City and Chicago, expectations were high.
Van Gisbergen delivered in a big way, leading 97 of 110 laps, only giving up the lead during pit stops. He started from pole position, and not a single driver was able to pass him on track, though Chase Briscoe did get close on a couple of restarts. It was now a different team taking the glory, but Red Bull shared plenty of the spotlight in their role as the primary sponsor while SVG burned it down on the frontstretch.

Alfredo, a well-liked figure in the NASCAR Xfinity Series garage, is set to make his sixth career start at the famed “Monster Mile” on July 19. He returns to the 1.0-mile concrete oval riding the momentum of his best Dover performance to date, a ninth-place finish last year after starting 21st.

NHMS camping areas offer a variety of terrain, and that means you’ll want to come prepared. Bring leveling blocks, wheel chocks and a reliable flashlight or headlamp if you’re setting up after dark. A stable, level RV not only feels better, but it’s also essential for safe cooking, sleeping and socializing.
- Bring Backup Power
Some campsites at NHMS offer hookups, but others don’t. That means a portable power source is a must-have. If you’re bringing a generator, be sure it runs at 75 decibels or less at all times. Portable battery banks or solar chargers can also help keep your devices charged and your RV systems running smoothly.
- Practice Campground Courtesy
The NHMS camping community is known for being friendly and welcoming. Introduce yourself to your neighbors, respect quiet hours (11 p.m. – 7 a.m. in most lots) and keep your music and lighting at respectful levels. Avoid stretching beyond your reserved space, and always be mindful when parking, grilling or playing games. A smile, wave and a little courtesy go a long way, and it’s part of what makes this race weekend feel like a homecoming for so many fans.
- Keep Things Clean
Race weekends can create a lot of waste, especially with food, drinks and packaging. Bring plenty of trash bags, designate bins for recycling and secure everything tightly to avoid litter or critter invasions. Never leave food or trash outside overnight, and make it a habit to clean up as you go. NHMS staff work hard to keep the facilities clean, so help them out by being a responsible camper.
- Show Off Your NASCAR Spirit
Nothing beats the visual energy of a decked-out campsite. Hang up your driver flags, string some LED lights, display collectible signs and fly your team colors high. Just be sure your decorations are windproof. Stakes, sandbags and zip ties are your best friends. Fans at NHMS love checking out creative setups, and your site might just become a popular photo stop.
- Pack Race-Weekend Essentials
Be ready for anything by packing smart. Essentials include bottled water, sunscreen, extra propane, a cooler full of ice, easy-grab snacks and a first-aid kit. Bring camp chairs, an outdoor rug to reduce dirt inside your rig and tools for basic fixes. A well-stocked RV means less running around and more time enjoying the races, concerts and campground fun.
- Nonstop Race Weekend Entertainment
NHMS delivers a full weekend of fun beyond the track. Fans can enjoy live DJs, the April Cushman Band (Thursday), The Flying Ivories Dueling Pianos (Saturday) and “The Magic Mile” Happy Hour Show (Saturday) at The Groove. Being Petty: The Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Experience presented by THOR Industries (Friday), Draw the Line (Saturday) and Tim Dugger (Sunday) keep the music going all weekend long. Families will love Camper Appreciation Musical Bingo presented by THOR Industries (Wednesday), Family Movie Night (Thursday) and the NASCAR Kids Zone (Friday – Sunday). Add in the Elm City Party Bike (Friday – Sunday), fireworks presented by THOR Industries (Friday), giant inflatable lawn games (Friday) and a variety of charity events, and you’ve got an entertainment lineup that keeps the energy high all weekend long.
- Soak in the Campground Camaraderie
More than just a place to sleep, the NHMS campgrounds are a celebration of NASCAR culture. From group cookouts to late-night storytelling, you’ll find fans of all ages sharing meals, games and memories. Don’t be shy – join a cornhole tournament, offer a cold drink or invite your neighbors to hang out by the fire. These connections are what turn race weekend into a yearly tradition.
