The Orcutt 14U All-Stars confronted their only test in the Central California 14U Babe Ruth State Tournament Wednesday, and they passed it.
As a result, Orcutt won the tournament championship.
After coming in for starter Eli Solis, Orcutt closer Elijah Ortiz shut down a Madera rally in the seventh inning by getting three consecutive outs to nail down a 4-3 win for Orcutt on Morrison Field at Morrison Park, Orcutt’s home site, to take the tournament championship.
The Orcutt 14U All-Stars consisted of the same players who won the 13U Central Cal state title in Lompoc last year. That team beat Madera for the tournament championship.
Orcutt won Wednesday in the first game of the championship bracket of the double elimination tournament. The host team made sure that no “if” game was necessary to determine the tournament champion.
As the Central Cal state tourney runner-up, Madera advanced to the 14U Babe Ruth Pacific Southwest Regional that will take place at Morrison Park July 20-26. Third-pace Central Cal state tourney finisher Hanford advanced. Orcutt had already earned a berth as the host team for the regional tournament before the Central California state tournament started.
When he came on in relief with Madera runners on first and second, no one out and the game on the line, “I was pretty nervous,” Ortiz acknowledged.
Ortiz, throwing strictly fastballs, overcame the nerves and got a forceout at third base, a strikeout and a groundout to Orcutt second baseman Easton Verbryke to preserve the win.

Orcutt beat Madera 16-0 in the winner’s bracket final, had outscored its opposition by a total of 62-14 in its previous four tournament games and seemed all set Wednesday to rack up another lopsided win.
The host team jumped to a 4-0 lead the first two innings. Orcutt lead-off batter Mason Padilla singled in the first inning and eventually scored on a passed ball. Orcutt scored three times in the second via a Niko Nevarez single, a throwing error and a Padilla single.
After the quick Orcutt start, things changed. Madera starter Julian Ruiz checked the hard-hitting Orcutt lineup on one hit after the second inning until Madera reliever Victor Mercado got the last out of the top of the seventh on a strikeout.
Madera pulled within 4-3 in the fourth. Ayden Kemmer scored when Orcutt botched a rundown. Javier Rios singled in another run then Ruiz pulled Madera within 4-3 with an RBI groundout.
In a tournament when Orcutt’s hitting overshadowed the team’s pitching for the most part, Solis helped Orcutt win the title by pitching six innings of five-hit ball. After Madera got within a run, Solis struck out a tough hitter, Kemmer, with a runner on third and two outs in the fifth then retired the side in order in the sixth.
“I threw the fastball, curveball and change-up,” said Solis. “The fastball was my go-to pitch.”
Padilla was the tournament MVP. Orcutt’s Verbryke, Zander Andersen and Cayden Gradoville made the All-Tournament Team.
