As the winter sports season unfolds, Dana Hills High has brought a mix of triumph and challenges. The girls’ water polo team has started the season with an outstanding  9-1 record and is on a seven-game winning streak, establishing the Dolphins as a formidable force in the pool. The boys’ soccer team has also been impressive, remaining unbeaten at 3-0 and allowing just one goal. Meanwhile, the boys wrestling team has excelled in early tournaments, with junior Kavi Garvey earning top honors at the Cossarek Classic.

While other teams have faced challenges, there’s plenty of time for improvement. The boys basketball team is adjusting to life without leading scorer Collin Haugh. The girls’ basketball team recently broke a four-game losing streak with a gritty victory over Yucaipa, while the girls’ soccer team has split its first two games.

Girls Water Polo

The Dolphins’ girls water polo team has made a powerful statement with a 9-1 record, currently riding an impressive seven-game winning streak. Their most thrilling victory came on Dec. 4, when they edged out Capistrano Valley High, 11-10, in a triple-overtime showdown. Senior standout Parker Bosick led the charge with four goals, while sophomore Madelyn Gonzales added three critical goals to secure the win. Senior Roya Goldstein was a wall, recording 15 saves under immense pressure.

A key element of the team’s offensive strength has been junior Sophie Jaeger, who has already scored a team-leading 36 goals this season and ranks second in assists with seven. The defense has also been impressive, permitting opponents to score in double digits only in two games. Through 10 games, Dana Hills appears to be a strong contender.

Boys Basketball

Dana Hills boys basketball team faces a challenging season with only one win through eight games. Their lone victory, a double-digit win over Woodbridge High in late November, has been overshadowed by struggles on both ends of the floor.

The absence of senior sharpshooter Collin Haugh, who tore his ACL before the season began, has left a significant void. Haugh’s prolific scoring in the past two seasons – averaging 26.2 points per game as a junior and 23.7 as a sophomore – powered the Dolphins to back-to-back Sea View League titles. Without their star, the Dolphins are still searching for their offensive rhythm while working to tighten a defense that has allowed 458 points through eight games.

Girls Basketball

Through the nine games, the Dana Hills girls’ basketball team has struggled to replace Kayla Rice, last year’s Sea View League MVP as a freshman, who transferred to JSerra High over the summer. The Dolphins (2-7) recently ended a four-game losing streak with a narrow 60-54 victory over Yucaipa High. Their other win was by two points.

Boys Soccer

The Dolphins’ boys soccer team has been nearly flawless, boasting a 3-0 record while conceding just one goal. The Dolphins have secured wins against Woodbridge High, Aliso Niguel High, and University High, displaying a disciplined defense and balanced attack that has scored seven goals.

Returning All-Sea View League players Colin Lacher, Andrew Bowles, Bryan Chavez, and Jack Miller have been pivotal to the quick start, providing leadership and experience for this confident squad.

Girls Soccer

The Dana Hills girls soccer team is going through a period of transition this season. They have split their first two games, winning 3-1 against St. Margaret’s High, but losing 2-0 to Sage Hill High. With 13 seniors graduating, the team has limited varsity experience, as only five players returned from last season’s roster. This young squad is determined to improve upon last year’s total of six wins.

Boys Wrestling

The Dana Hills boys wrestling team quickly made a strong impression at the Cossarek Classic. Junior Kavi Garvey dominated the competition, securing first place and earning the Lightweight MVP award. Seniors Nelson Lecona and Avery Barner also performed well, finishing in fourth and eighth place, respectively. Barner exhibited impressive resilience by fighting through the consolation bracket.

Cross Country

On the heels of winning his third consecutive CIF state championship, Dolphins long-distance star Evan Noonan competed in the Nike Cross Country Nationals in Portland on Saturday, Dec. 7, and finished the 5,000-meter race in fifth place with a time of 15:32.70, four seconds behind champion Charlie Vause of Rio Rancho High (15:28.10).

Noonan also won the league and CIF-SS titles in November before completing his Division III “3-peat” at the State Cross Country Championships in Fresno.

Girls Volleyball

Senior outside hitter Ava Hoff was named to the 2024 Division 3 All-CIF Girls Volleyball Team, as selected by the Girls Volleyball Coaches’ Selection Committee.
