Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) Executive Director and CEO David Rishel outlined several service changes and upgrades during a presentation at Monday’s State College Borough Council meeting.

Rishel proposed a fare increase from $2.20 to $2.50 for all community and express CATABUS routes as well as for the CATAGO! on-demand transit service. Rishel attributed the increase to the rate of inflation between 2020 — when the fare was last increased — and 2025.

Rishel also said CATAGO! would be extended to serve the entirety of Centre County by the end of the year so residents outside of State College can access CATABUS routes. 

He then discussed the potential to make the University Parkway (UP) and parts of the Happy Valley (HV) trial routes permanent, stating that the former route helped to cover a “drought of service” between University Park and Easterly Parkway.

Rishel announced the discontinuation of the B-Line route, which runs to Bellefonte and Benner townships, due to both municipalities choosing to leave CATA, with service ending on June 30. He said he is currently speaking with the Centre County Office of Transportation to see if State College residents could use the county’s services in place of the B-Line.

He also announced the replacement of fare boxes with scanners that allow paper tickets, credit cards and smartphone apps to be used to pay CATA fares, adding that the scanners will be implemented in August, prior to the start of the fall 2025 semester.

Rishel said CATA was in the process of developing a new app that would consolidate all of CATA’s services that he said could include on-demand connections to the State College Regional Airport as well as connections to train lines in Lewistown and Tyrone in coordination with Amtrak.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Adrian College baseball team is back to serving as host of an NCAA Tournament Regional. The Bulldogs earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning in the MIAA Conference Tournament last weekend. The NCAA Regionals are scheduled to take place May 16-18 at Nicolay Field.

The Bulldogs earned the No. 4 seed in the four-team regional and will start its battle with No. 1 UW-Whitewater at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 16. The Bulldogs are no strangers to the Warhawks after traveling to them in 2021 for a NCAA Regional that sent Adrian to the College World Series. The other two teams in the regional are No. 2 Washington University (Mo.) and No. 3 Ohio Northern University.

The regional will consist of a four-team double elimination bracket with the winner advancing to the NCAA Super Regionals against the winner of the NCAA Regional hosted by Gustavus Adolphus.

Nick Saban won six national championships with the Alabama Crimson Tide as head coach from 2007-2023.

Now that he is retired, Saban is moving on to a bigger role, as an expected co-chair on President Donald Trump’s college football commission. The commission will look into problems with college football regarding the transfer portal, unregulated booster compensation to athletes, employment of college athletes and Title IX.

On a recent episode of “The Joel Klatt Show,” Joel Klatt revealed that he was excited to see what the commission accomplishes.

Saban will be on the commission with Cody Campbell, who founded the Texas Tech Red Raiders’ Matador Club NIL collective.

“I don’t want people looking out for themselves that are in positions of power in college football or college or intercollegiate athletics,” Klatt said. “I want people to look out for all the stakeholders, and I put you in that as a fan. And I think Nick Saban understands that. Who knows what comes out of this commission? I’m excited for it. I’m very excited for it.”

Before Alabama, Saban was the head coach for the LSU Tigers from 2000-04 and the Miami Dolphins from 2005-06. He won one national title with LSU in 2003.

Saban’s last season as a head coach was with Alabama in 2023. He retired following a loss to the Michigan Wolverines in the College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide were beaten by the Wolverines 23-17 in overtime.

After retiring, Saban became a crew member on “College GameDay” in 2024.

Now, Alabama is led by former Washington Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer. DeBoer finished his first season at Alabama at 9-4.

HANOVER, N.H.—Jada Jones of Dartmouth women’s track & field and Jack Intihar of men’s track & field have been named The Richard’s Group Athletes of the Week following outstanding performances at the Ivy League Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes, one male, one female – as Athletes of the Week.

Jada Jones, Junior, Rock Hill, S.C., Women’s Track and Field

Jada Jones stood out for the Big Green at the Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships in New Haven, Conn., this past weekend. After being crowned the indoor 200m Ivy League Champion in March, Jones had a 23.55 finish in the outdoor 200m, defending her title and setting a school record in the process. Additionally, Jones brought home a bronze medal in the 400m with her 54.47 mark.

Jack Intihar, Sophomore, Crozet, Va., Men’s Track and Field

Jack Intihar had a highly successful weekend during the Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships. Intihar placed second in the decathlon with 7321 points, which is good for second all-time in program history. Additionally, he set personal records in six of the ten decathlon events, as well as putting himself at sixth all-time in the long jump with his 7.32m mark.

Jeffrey E. van Lingen, 62, of 369 Housatonic Street, Lenox, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends on May 8, 2025, after a yearlong battle with cancer.

Jeffrey was born in Pittsfield on April 1, 1963, to the late Johnny and Jeannette Blaset van Lingen. He attended Lenox Memorial High School and was a 1981 graduate. Playing hockey for Lenox, he proudly represented his school and the United States playing teams in both Finland and Sweden. In his senior year, he was the recipient of the Don Troy Sportsmanship Award presented annually by the Berkshire County chapter of the National Ice Hockey Officials Association.

After high school, Jeffrey attended Cambridge College earning his Master’s Degree. He obtained his real estate license and was the former owner-operator of Quest Connect in Pittsfield. At the time of his death, Jeff was employed as the I.T. administrator at Interprint in Pittsfield.

Jeffrey enjoyed taking and watching his daughter Bailey compete at various horse-riding competitions throughout the country. He enjoyed a good—or not so good—game of golf with his friends, as well as hosting a long-standing tradition of Funday Sundays with family and friends for the past 20 years. He excelled in the kitchen and loved entertaining, laughing, and sharing meals with anyone willing to join.

Jeffrey is survived by his daughter Bailey H. van Lingen and her husband Emrah Celikmakas of Groton, Mass.; his life partner Donna Marie Gilmore of Lenox; his brother Andy (Katie) of Ludlow, Mass.; his nephew Bryan (Sandy) of Pittsfield; his niece Selena (Heather) of Lee; his nephew Jeremy (Gainsville); Ninette van Lingen of Harvard; and his bonus children, Brennan (Michelle) of Northfield, Mass., Christopher (Danielle) of Millbury, Mass., Alison (Bradley) of Westfield, Mass., and Ethan (Jordynne) of Pittsfield; along with his grandchildren, Carter, Scarlett, Amelia, Avery, Ellianna, and a grandson expected to arrive in July.

There will be a service held on Wednesday, May 14, beginning at 11 a.m., at the Roche Funeral Home, 120 Main Street, Lenox, MA 01240. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jeff’s memory may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of the funeral home.
