1. Could smart glasses speed up vision problems?

“These smart glasses shouldn’t impact presbyopia or nearsightedness any faster than traditional eyewear, as the technologies don’t alter the core visual function,” Dr Soman says, offering reassurance to users concerned about long-term effects.

2. Blue light protection: A must for the screen age?

With screen time on the rise, the blue light filter in smart glasses is a hot topic. “These filters, whether in smart or traditional glasses, help reduce eye strain from prolonged screen use,” she notes. However, she adds, “More research is needed to confirm the long-term benefits of blue light protection.”

3. Can tech glasses cause eye strain?

“Prolonged use of smart glasses can lead to eye fatigue, burning, or twitching—symptoms similar to those caused by dry eyes from screen time,” Dr Soman cautions. Her advice? “A professional ophthalmic evaluation is key before and during use.”

4. The UV and digital dilemma

While smart sunglasses offer UV protection – a must in sunny regions like Dubai – Dr Soman points out that digital displays could present new concerns. “The long-term effects of radiation from Wi-Fi, LEDs, and processing units need more research,” she says, stressing that the future of smart eyewear is still unfolding.

The verdict: Smart glasses may offer cutting-edge technology, but Dr Soman advises caution. “While their innovative features are undeniable, we’ll need more data to fully understand the health impacts over time.”

Driven by the explosive growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and data centers, U.S. electricity demand and electricity prices are rising rapidly. Dozens of new data centers–each with the electricity needs of a small city–are gobbling up the nation’s power supply.

Forecasters see U.S. electricity demand growing 25% by 2030–and nearly 80% by 2050. In some regions of the country, it will be far more and even faster. The nation’s largest regional electricity grid, PJM Interconnection–which stretches from Virginia to Illinois–expects that, by 2030, new data center power demand will equal the electricity needs of 20 million homes.

This onslaught of new demand is coming far faster than utilities can add new generating capacity and energy infrastructure. It’s also putting immense pressure on electricity prices–the prices paid not just by tech companies but by the average household as well.

Electricity prices could jump 15% to 40% in just the next five years, according to a recent forecast. By 2050, prices might even double. And these spikes are coming on top of an existing jump in prices. According to an analysis from the Department of Energy, retail electricity prices have increased faster than the rate of inflation since 2022–rising 13%.

Amazon, Google, Meta, and other tech giants are talking a good game about next-generation nuclear power plants and new natural gas generation to meet their enormous, around-the-clock power needs. But it will be years before those plans are realized. In the near-term, they’re buying up the very electricity that supplies U.S. households.

Grid operators and utilities are trying to add new power capacity to meet surging demand, but the cost of doing so is being socialized across the entire ratepayer base. Effectively, grandma is being asked to pay more to accommodate the needs of some of the world’s wealthiest companies.

Several states are trying to advance legislation to ensure that ratepayers aren’t stuck with these costs. But the genie is largely out of the bottle. To shield consumers, we’re going to need smart policy. We’re also going to need these tech giants to step up to the plate.

We need pragmatism to meet this urgent need for more electricity. The place to start is by ensuring that today’s existing baseload power plants stay online–and aren’t forced into early retirement by misguided policy.

While data center developers have signed deals to keep nuclear power plants running–and to even bring mothballed reactors back online–they should take the same exact approach with America’s coal fleet.

Dozens of operating coal plants are being pushed offline to comply with state renewable energy mandates. The Trump administration is beginning to step in–to keep key plants operating in markets already desperately short of power. But tech companies need to get into the mix.

Data center developers should match their promises of building new power generation with immediate efforts to keep existing power plants running. If tech companies are determined to shape our future, they should ensure we have the energy affordability bridge to get there.

The AI and data center buildout is being called a new industrial revolution and an enormous economic opportunity. That may be true–and there’s good reason to want that revolution to happen here rather than in China. But we must ensure winning the AI race doesn’t mean swamping the average American household with ever-rising energy costs and power shortages.

Matt Kandrach is the President of Consumer Action for a Strong Economy.

These activities, whether competitive or for leisure, serve as a medium of both amusement and physical fitness. Factors such as heightened health consciousness, improved facility access, and the need for relaxation and enjoyment are prompting greater involvement in these activities. The application of sports injury prediction aids in avoiding injury, enhancing training, and ensuring a quicker, safer recovery, thereby making the activities more secure and enjoyable. To illustrate, data from the US-based Outdoor Industry Association in January 2022 showed that in 2021, a record high participation rate was observed with 164.2 million Americans, or 54% of the population aged 6 and over, partaking in outdoor recreation at least once. Since March 2020, there has been a 6.9% increase in outdoor participants, supplemented by a further 2.2% growth in 2021, bringing the total participants to 164.2 million. U.S. Open to feature a new Bunker Cam on NBC Sports

NBC Sports will debut a new Bunker Cam at this week’s U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, all thanks to a sprinkler head — well, not a real one.

NEP Group, the leading media technology company, developed a new 3D-printed housing device to wirelessly transmit live 4K video from the bunker over a radio frequency with less infrastructure or impact on the golf course. Crucially, the USGA and PGA Tour already have a rule in place for how to handle a golf ball that lands on or near a sprinkler head, so no additional regulation was needed. It’s hiding in plain sight.

The U.S. Open will be the debut of the updated Bunker Cam, but it was tested successfully in the background of The Players Championship in March.

“We got tremendous looks, from the sand exploding right into the lens to slow-motion effects, seeing the ball come out of the sand and how the club connected with the ball,” said Dan Grainge, President of NEP Specialty Capture division. “You can see all the detail.”

Previous installations required an underground cable to tether the camera to the battery, antennas and other electronics. That necessitated a visit to the course weeks in advance of a tournament to dig a small trench for the wires and permit sufficient time for the grass to regrow to the course’s standards.

NEP miniaturized the antenna and battery into a 3D-printed sprinkler head to hide it on the golf course.

The ease of installation for the new Bunker Cam enables more deployments. There will be three at the U.S. Open when there typically would only be one or maybe two when it was wired. NEP glues sand and dirt from the course to the camera housing to help it match the look and color of each course.

Grainge called the R&D required “a tremendous amount of investment and innovation” to miniaturize the tech and still maintain a clear broadcast picture for either live or reply use. He said it would need to be used several times for NEP to get a return on its investment but added that it is already scheduled to be used for several future events with NBC and CBS as well.

Club World Cup officials will use an accelerated version of semi-automatic offside (SAO) technology, which will immediately signal referees to stop play if a player who is more than 10 centimetres offside touches the ball.

This is one of the most important initiatives being implemented in this 32-team tournament to be held in the USA and aims to reduce unnecessary delays during the game.

The assistant referees will receive the notification immediately, without having to wait for the positions and distances to be checked, as is usually the case with the semi-automatic offside systems used in most major leagues.

SAO was first introduced in the Premier League on April 12, while previously all offside decisions were made by VAR.

This improved technology comes just a month after Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi suffered a serious abdominal injury after colliding with the post in the match against Leicester, in an action that occurred despite him being in a clear offside position that had not been flagged.

Among the other innovations that will be used in the tournament that starts on Sunday are:

  • Referees will wear body cameras, which will broadcast live footage before the match and on delay during it.
  • An eight-second countdown for goalies to release the ball after possession.
  • VAR footage will be broadcast in real time to fans inside the stadium.

These developments aim to increase transparency, efficiency and safety on the field during this important international competition.
