The No. 2 team in the national rankings, Duncanville, aims to take a significant step towards reaching the finals for a third consecutive year.
With a perfect record of 12-0, Duncanville enters Saturday’s matchup against Cypress Bridgeland in Hewitt as the strong favorite — this is their first encounter with the Houston-based team. The Panthers are currently averaging 319 passing yards per game, led by Alabama commit Keelon Russell.
Last week, he threw six touchdown passes against The Woodlands and was named the Gatorade Texas Player of the Year, an announcement made Friday morning. The last two recipients of this award both began their SEC careers this year: Jackson Arnold at Oklahoma, and DJ Lagway at Florida.
Russell is among three finalists for the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year, competing against Alvin Henderson from Elba, Alabama, and Jackson Cantwell from Nixa, Missouri.
Per the Tuscaloosa News, Russell is regarded as the highest-rated quarterback recruit for Alabama since Bryce Young in 2018.
He was one of eight Panthers to commit to Division I football on Wednesday. The other signees included:
After defeating Waxahachie 24-19 last week, Bridgeland encounters another District 11-6A rival. Sophomore RB Kash Schwab rushed for 173 yards and scored two touchdowns in that game.
In contrast, Duncanville triumphed over Waxahachie, 41-17.
Schwab has accumulated 1,412 yards and 10 touchdowns throughout 13 games. Collectively, the Bears’ two quarterbacks have combined for 2,144 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes.
On Wednesday, the Bears had two players sign with SEC schools, with Ryan Fodje committing to Oklahoma and Jonte Newman to Texas A&M.
On December 3, Newman, a left tackle, was recognized as a finalist for the Touchdown Club of Houston Offensive Player of the Year. This accolade has been previously awarded to NFL offensive lineman Alan Faneca as well as notable skill players like Vince Young, Devon Achane, and CeeDee Lamb.
