Emma Raducanu “will face challenges in renegotiating or extending” her commercial contracts and sponsorships unless she begins to consistently win matches, based on insights from a sports finance expert.

Raducanu became a global phenomenon in 2021 when she triumphed at the US Open as a qualifier, leading to an influx of endorsement opportunities with prominent brands like Vodafone, British Airways, Evian, Porsche, Tiffany & Co., and Dior due to her Grand Slam victory at Flushing Meadows.

However, that US Open championship remains the 22-year-old’s sole top-level title as a professional, as she has yet to reach another final since that remarkable journey three years ago.

Raducanu – who achieved a peak of No 10 in the WTA Rankings after her New York success – has encountered difficulties with injuries and performance over the last couple of years and is currently positioned just within the top 60, although she has had a fairly successful comeback year, starting the season outside the top 300.

Despite her challenges on the court, Raducanu remains one of the highest-earning female tennis players, thanks to her off-court agreements; she ranked seventh on the 2024 earnings list, according to Sportico, with $14m from endorsements.

Nevertheless, Dr. Rob Wilson – an expert in Applied Sports Finance at Sheffield Hallam University – indicates that Raducanu needs to improve her performance to retain her sponsors.

Emma Raducanu reveals a major decision that may change her career

“Emma Raducanu must secure victories to uphold her commercial deals. Virtually everything regarding sponsorships in Raducanu’s situation hinges on her performance both on and off the court,” Dr. Wilson stated in remarks to OLBG.

“Therefore, winning matches is essential to generate further advantages [for] off-field sponsorships, commercial endorsements, social media influence, and so forth, in order to maintain relevance and a significant voice in that marketplace.

“Her astuteness was evident in signing lengthy contracts following her US Open victory. It was different from [darts player] Luke Littler, who opted for short-term contracts to capitalize on a particular moment in darts.

“But if she fails to start winning matches and doesn’t advance far in tournaments, she will genuinely find it difficult to renegotiate or extend any of those commercial endorsements, and her career could be at risk at an early stage, which would be a tremendous loss because she is incredibly talented and highly marketable.”
