Longfellow Elementary School third-graders participated in Every Kid in a Lifejacket April 17 at the school, which included presentations from South Arkansas Fire Protection District and rangers with the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area presenting on the importance of personal flotation devices when recreating in the river or in lakes.
Corinne Servis with AHRA said the program started in 2021 and originally piloted at both LES and the Salida Montessori School. Since then, the program has expanded to cover municipalities from Buena Vista to Florence.
She said the point of the program is to give students an introduction to water safety and also provide them with a free lifejacket that they can trade in as they grow out of it.
“It’s to make water safety and education accessible, and a lifejacket accessible, to every kid that has this amazing resource running through their neighborhood,” Servis said.
The jackets are purchased at a cost of $32 per jacket, which is a “pro deal at cost” because the manufacturer, Northwest River Supplies (NRS), is “very supportive of the program.” Typically, the jackets provided to students would retail at $79.95.
Funds to purchase the lifejackets come through a Coast Guard grant, but there have been other grant opportunities and funding sources identified by AHRA Ranger Jeff Hammond.
Hammond said he has been working with undergraduate students at Western Colorado University to identify more permanent funding sources for the program. One suggestion is a “roundup” system, where participating businesses will ask shoppers if they’d like to round the total up to the nearest dollar, with those funds going to support the program.
Hammond said that although a few businesses have expressed interest in participating in something of that nature, none have given him a solid yes or no.
Hammond said they are always accepting donations to the program, and anyone who wishes to donate may do so by mailing a check or by stopping in to the AHRA office in Salida. He said donating the cost of a retail lifejacket provides two for the Every Kid in a Lifejacket program.
