MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Formula 1 announced a 10-year extension with the Miami Grand Prix on Friday that will ensure the event remains on the calendar through 2041.

“From our standpoint, it enables us to say that this event is here to stay for a very long time,” said Tom Garfinkel, managing partner of the Miami Grand Prix. “Securing a 10-year extension with Formula 1 through 2041 is an extraordinary milestone for all of us at South Florida Motorsports and a true testament to the hard work of our team, the strength of our partnerships, the support of our community and the growth of the sport in the United States.”

The race debuted in 2022 as the second F1 race in the United States on the schedule. Sunday’s running will be the fourth in what was originally a 10-year contract between Miami promoters and F1.

There are now three F1 races in the U.S. every year. Las Vegas was added to the schedule in 2023 and F1 also makes a stop at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

F1 president Stefano Domenicali stressed how vital Miami is to the series’ portfolio as it continues to grow dramatically in the U.S.

“In just three years, the Miami Grand Prix has established itself as one of the most important and spectacular events on our calendar, an extraordinary example of quality and vision that truly represents the spirit and ambition of Formula 1 in the United States,” Domenicali said. “Extending this agreement until 2041 is a strategic milestone of enormous importance, which strengthens our presence in America and consolidates the ever-deepening bond with our fan base there, which is constantly growing and passionate like never before.”

The Miami extension comes two days after F1 announced a three-year extension with Mexico City. The difference, though, is that Mexico City in the final year of its existing contract.

The Miami race, meanwhile, was touted as a key event in F1’s focus on North American growth, as well as the impact the race has on South Florida. The Miami Grand Prix has generated more than $1 billion in economic impact in its first three runnings.

South Florida Motorsports, the official promoter, has established internship programs, worked with local charities, and promoted home-grown businesses each year to build a community relationship around the grand prix. South Florida Motorsports was named 2024 F1 “Promoter of the Year.”

Promoters claim a record 275,000 spectators attended three days of activities last year and the race attracted the largest U.S. F1 television audience of all time, with 3.1 million viewers.

The Miami Grand Prix is held around Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, home of the Miami Dolphins, the ATP and WTA Miami Open, and seven matches at next year’s soccer World Cup.

The 2025 NASCAR All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro had everything: Short-track bumping, tire strategy twists, and just enough controversy to keep fans arguing into the night. Christopher Bell walked away with the win, but the real story is how he got there. Was it a legit thriller or a manufactured mess?

  • Did the race format help or hurt the action on track?
  • How did tire strategy completely change the outcome, and burn some teams hard?
  • What was up with the “promoter’s caution” and Michael Waltrip tossing a yellow?
  • And was that bump from Bell on Logano classic short track racing, or just dirty?

Some fans loved the chaos, others think NASCAR needs to stop trying so hard to create drama. One thing’s for sure—this race has people talking. And drivers? Even more fired up than usual. Did the format deliver a true All-Star showcase, or just a gimmick with a checkered flag? Watch now and decide for yourself, then drop your take in the comments.

The Brief

  • INDYCAR racing is drawing fans of all ages.

  • At the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, racing fans young and old get one-on-one experiences with the drivers.

INDIANAPOLISIt wasn’t a race to see who can meet the most drivers, but Hayden Jaskela had quite the starting position. He was one of the first to meet the man in the orange hat, Scott Dixon, INDYCAR SERIES driver.

Ready to meet an INDYCAR driver

What we know

When FOX6 News asked him why Dixon is his favorite driver, he said, “My middle name’s Scott, and he’s also a redhead.”

Jaskela joined other young people at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, who cheered for Dixon, like Titus Repp.

“He signed a car for me,” said Repp, a 10-year-old INDYCAR SERIES fan.

While some fans had their eyes on the future of INDYCAR, one man was looking back.

What they’re saying

“Here I am, kind of honoring my dad,” said Dylan James, a new INDYCAR SERIES fan. “He passed last year.”

James is from New Zealand, like Dixon.

“I think it’s going to be emotional,” said James. “He loved the spectacle of epic sports events; he went to several, never to the Indy 500, so it’s a big deal to be remembering him this way.”

It’s a father-son bond Doug Boles knows well. He’s the president of INDYCAR and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“I grew in a family where my dad actually worked in the sport, so it was kind of all I’ve really ever known, especially this place, the Indianapolis 500,” said Boles. “We just had this connection around the sport.”

Racing brings unity

Dig deeper

As the 109th Indianapolis 500 approaches, Boles said he is looking forward to the unity the race brings.

“I look forward to seeing the families, the generations of families that have been coming to the speedway so often,” said Boles.

Jaskela is already a part of the special tradition. He admires drivers, like Dixon, who make history with every lap.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.

For the first time since the season-opening Daytona 500, NASCAR will reach 40 entries for a Cup Series race. Along with the usual 36 charted teams, four open entries will take part in NASCAR’s longest race on Memorial Day Weekend.

Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and four-time Coke 600 winner Jimmie Johnson will be one of those open entries, driving the No. 84 Legacy Motor Club Toyota. It will also be Johnson’s 700th career start.

Trackhouse Racing will enter a fourth car with rising star Connor Zilisch driving the No. 87 Chevrolet, making his second career start in the Cup Series but his first on an oval. Zilisch skipped the most recent Xfinity race at Kansas due to a back injury, but he has been cleared to return to competition this weekend.

Garage 66. (formerly MBM Motorsports) will enter the No. 66 Ford Mustang with Josh Bilicki as the driver while NY Racing Team will enter the No. 44 Chevrolet. No driver has been officially announced for the NY Racing Team entry, but it’s likely to be J.J. Yeley.

There are also 40 entries for the NASCAR Xfinity race, which will feature the following Cup stars: William Byron, Austin Dillon, and Chase Briscoe. Of note, Katherine Legge will also be participating after skipping this year’s Indy 500 in favor of gaining more stock car experience.

There are 34 entries for the Truck Series, bringing the total to 114 for the three national divisions. Kyle Busch and Ross Chastain are the only full-time Cup drivers in the field, but B.J. McLeod will also be taking part after putting a deal together with Spire Motorsport.

INDYCAR is also suspending the team strategists for Newgarden and Power for the remainder of the Indy 500.

SPEEDWAY, Ind. — Two-time defending Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden and 2018 winner Will Power will now start at the end of the grid Sunday after failing a tech inspection during qualifying.

INDYCAR announced the Team Penske drivers will start 32nd and 33rd in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing on May 25 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after they were in violation of INDYCAR Rule 14.7.8.16.

After locking out the front row in 2024, none of the Penske cars turned a lap during Sunday’s “Fast Twelve” session.

Scott McLaughlin’s team elected to not even attempt to qualify after McLaughlin crashed heavily during the morning practice session, necessitating repairs. The car would likely not be ready in time for qualifying, and the team opted to be safe rather than sorry.

Later, after “Fast Twelve” qualifying began, the Penske cars of Power and Newgarden abruptly pulled out of line and headed back to Gasoline Alley. IndyCar announced that the two cars had failed pre-qualifying tech inspection and would not be allowed to qualify.

“The integrity of the Indianapolis 500 is paramount, and this violation of the INDYCAR rule against modification to this part and using it ‘as supplied’ is clear,” INDYCAR President J. Douglas Boles said. “The penalty should be more than simply starting where the cars might have qualified anyway, if given the opportunity. The cars belong in the field as two of the fastest 33; however, starting on the tail of the field is the appropriate penalty in this instance.”

McLaughlin will still start in the 10th spot after INDYCAR found that the car was using a legal and unmodified attenuator. This is the final spot for those who qualified to participate in the “Fast Twelve.”

Also, INDYCAR is suspending Newgarden and Power’s team strategists for the rest of the Indy 500, and both drivers will forfeit Indy 500 qualification points and have been fined $100,000.

Newgarden and Power will forfeit their pit positions and will select their pit boxes after the remainder of the field has an opportunity to adjust accordingly.
