FOOTBALL
The 91st varsity season kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 21, at Chino for Laguna’s third matchup against the Cowboys. The series is tied at 1-1, and last year the Cowboys were Hacienda League co-champions, but they finished 5-7 overall and were eliminated in the second round of the D-10 playoffs, ending the season ranked #175.
Breakers finished the season ranked #69 out of 373 schools in the Southern Section, losing in the first round of the D-4 playoffs. This year, Laguna is expected to do well, with projections of an 8-2 record from several services with the Tesoro and Dana Hills games. The Cal-Preps rankings that CIF will use for playoff placement place Laguna in a similar position. The main concern for the Breakers is depth, as their starting lineup is expected to handle the schedule, but there are no easy, low-ranked teams to give players a chance to rest and regroup for the difficult league contests. Returning Laguna players to watch include seniors Jack Hooper, Grant Regal and Brady Stringham, as well as juniors Jack Hurst (QB) and Wyatt Bogdan. You will hear these names often at every game.
The home opener is on Friday, Aug. 29, against Santa Monica.
FLAG FOOTBALL (0-1)

Coach Kollock reported that Laguna played a tremendous defensive game with the halftime score at 0-0. Overall, Olivia Kirkbride led the team in tackles (flag pulls). Laguna was down 12-0 in the fourth quarter with less than 5 minutes remaining when Cami Thomas made an interception to set up a scoring drive. Stella Kollock threw a short pass to Hayden Crane-Henning, who broke for approximately a 40-yard gain. Facing 3rd down and 8 yards, Stella Kollock completed a key pass to Evie Hurst for the first down. She then threw a pass to Lila Swinson for an 8-yard touchdown. On the conversion, Stella Kollock passed to Lila Swinson for the point. Loara ran out the clock to end the game.
