MEDFORD, MA (December 6, 2024) – The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) has revealed that the coaching team at Tufts University has been honored as the 2024 Region II Coaching Staff of the Year.
Jumbo head coach Tina Mattera along with assistant coaches Megan Caveney, Katie Weber, and Troy Zirbel are among seven Division III coaching staffs recognized by the NFHCA today. They are now in consideration for the 2024 NFHCA Division III National Coaching Staff of the Year award, the winner of which will be revealed on January 16, 2025, during the NFHCA Hall of Fame reception, sponsored by AstroTurf®, at the 2025 NFHCA Annual Convention.
Mattera and her team led the Jumbos to a remarkable 19-3 record this fall, matching the Tufts program’s record for most victories in a season. This represents a six-win improvement over last year’s 13-6 record and marks the Jumbos’ best performance since 2018.
This season, the Jumbos halted Middlebury College’s 43-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory against the Panthers on October 19. This win was a part of an impressive 13-game winning streak that included four consecutive shootout victories late in the season.
The Jumbos claimed the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) championship—achieving this by winning every match in a shootout—for the first time since 2016. Additionally, they were one of four teams nationwide selected to host the NCAA Regional weekend, also for the first time since 2016.
Tufts reached the NCAA Division III Championship Game for the fifth time, ultimately losing to Middlebury 2-1 in Lexington, Virginia.
The Jumbos had four players named to the NFHCA All-Region team and achieved two top-10 national rankings, boasting a 0.81 goals against average (ninth) and a .864 winning percentage (third).
