No. 25 Wis-Whitewater 5, Carthage 2RACINE – The Carthage men’s tennis team hosted the Wis-Whitewater Warhawks, the 25th best team in the country in the latest ITA rankings, on Friday evening. The Firebirds got out to a strong start in doubles play, but the Warhawks bounced back in singles play to claim the match. In doubles play, Elios Briand and Myles Krzewinski claimed a 7-5 victory in #1 doubles over Theo Billson and Reuben Giorgio. Cooper Ferruzzi and Francisco Silveira dropped a 7-5 contest to Tyler Nelson and Payton Adkisson. Cyriac Cayuela and Finn Morris won a 6-3 battle in #3 doubles over Will Ulrich and Drew Van Fossen. The Firebirds took two of the three doubles matches, earning the overall point to jump ahead 1-0.
In singles play, Silveira came up short in #1 singles, dropping a 6-1, 6-3 bout with Billson. Krzewinski took an early lead before falling 2-6, 6-4, (6-3) to Nelson. Briand came up short after a hard fought 6-3, 6-7 (12-14), (15-13) battle with Giovanni Vitali. Diego Silva fell 6-2, 6-0 to Van Fossen in #4 singles. Morris fell to Charles Morgan with a pair of 6-3 losses. Cayuela defeated Dumbauld 6-1, 6-4 in #6 singles.
The Firebirds (2-2) will return to action on Feb. 16 as the squad heads to the Windy City to take on no. 10 UChicago at 1 p.m. Carthage tennis returns to the Life Sport Athletic Club on Friday, Feb. 21 to host MSOE. For more information, visit athletics.carthage.edu.
