Athlete of the Year Nominations

Ten Siuslaw High School student-athletes are finalists for this year’s High School Athlete of the Year award, which will be announced Monday night, June 9th, at 6 p.m. at the Siuslaw High School Mall. Parents and families of the athletes are welcome to attend. While many athletes from Siuslaw and Mapleton showed incredible heart and dedication throughout the school year, these ten have risen to the top. For the boys: Clayton Wilson, Will Johnson, Kale Jensen, Max Reynolds, and Jacob Mann. For the girls: Danin Lacouture, Macali Lade, Aidell Cadet, Addison McNeill, and Abigail Riggs.

Hall of Fame Inductee: Tom Hagle

Tom Hagle, a standout lineman from the legendary 1989 Siuslaw football team, will be inducted into the Siuslaw High School Hall of Fame on August 22nd. A 1990 graduate, Hagle was the first Viking named first-team all-state in back-to-back seasons. He anchored the offensive line during a dominant three-year run that saw Siuslaw go 27-7 and reach the state playoffs each year. Coach Len Lutero called him one of the top five blockers he ever coached. The Hall of Fame ceremony is at 5 p.m. at Siuslaw High’s main gym. Admission is free; a $10 donation to the Booster Club is encouraged.

Outdoor Nationals

Four Siuslaw athletes are set to compete at the Nike Outdoor Nationals beginning June 19th at Hayward Field in Eugene. Freshman Henry Stone will run in the Frosh Mile, junior Kale Jensen is entered in the Championship Decathlon, junior Will Johnson will compete in the Championship Triple Jump, and sophomore Caleb Gray is scheduled for the Emerging Elite Javelin. The national meet brings together top high school athletes from across the country, and all four Vikings will represent Siuslaw on one of track and field’s biggest stages.

AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine (WAGM) – In the past two seasons the Caribou Vikings boys’ tennis team have only lost three matches.

Two out of three of those losses came against the John Bapst Crusaders.

John Bapst was taken off of Caribou’s schedule this regular season, but the Crusaders were the Vikings first opponent in the playoffs.

A quarterfinal match that was meant to be played Tuesday afternoon, but the John Bapst team bus struck a deer on their trip North and because of that the match was rescheduled and played this afternoon.

A lot of close matches in this contest.

At first Caribou had the edge as they were winning the majority of matches.

John Bapst came storming back as the afternoon went on ending Caribou’s perfect 12-0 season, winning 4-1.

Head coach Abraham Bouchard led the team to an undefeated regular season in his first year at the helm for the Vikings.

The Caribou Lady Vikings competed against Ellsworth yesterday winning 3-2.

Today they took to their home courts again, this time for a semi final matchup against the Mount Desert Island Trojans.

The girls played as the boys matches wrapped up.

The doubles teams may have lost their match yesterday, but that clearly did not affect the team just 24 hours later.

Joslyn Griffeth and Isabella Sleeper won the first doubles match, while Madison Thibault and Bri Levesque won second doubles, giving Caribou a quick 2-0 lead.

The Lady Vikings only needed to win one of the three singles matches.

Third singles Ella Bennett continues her undefeated streak.

After todays match she is now 44-0 in her three years of play.

First singles Madelynn Deprey also won her second match in the last day.

And that is more than Caribou needed to secure their spot in the next round.

The Lady Trojans make the trip to Caribou and end up losing 4-1.

Caribou will play Old Town on Tuesday, June 10th at 2:00pm at Brewer High School for a Regional Championship.

Two of the top teams in Class D met in Fort Fairfield yesterday.

Last time the 13-0 Katahdin Cougars and the 11-2 Tigers matched up, Katahdin won in Staceyville 10-0.

The Tigers leading late in this game, holding Katahdin to just one run.

Katahdin down to their final chance to secure an undefeated season, they were trailing 4-1 and that deficit was enough, Graedon King was on the mound for Fort Fairfield.

The Cougars have had two two run games this season, however both of those resulted in wins.

Katahdin picks up their first loss of the season with their lowest scoring game of the year.

Fort Fairfield was boosted up the standings into the #2 seed, the team finished the regular season 12-2 as they did last season.

The Class D baseball quarterfinals will be played on June 12th, Katahdin and Fort Fairifeld will both have home field advantage.

During the last game of the basketball season, Fort Fairfield ended Madawaska’s undefeated streak on their final game of the season.

The undefeated Katahdin Cougars visited the Tigers for their final game of the year hoping to stay flawless, the Tigers beat them 4-1.

The Northern Maine Moose beat the Hampden Academy Broncos 17-14.

“We always enjoy playing against this team as we both started our lacrosse programs around the same time. We’re seeing the same growing pains. We always know it’s going to be a good competition. Tonight was no exception. It was a shooting match between Isaiah Ervin and their star player. In the moment you don’t want the game to go back and forth but when you can sit back and reflect of what you just watched, It was a game of two players going head-to-head. The great part is they congratulated each other after some goals. If you’re a fan that got to watch the game this was a great game to watch with 31 total goals,” said head coach Adam Simoes.

Isaiah Ervin scored 14 goals in his last regular season game with the Moose.

It won’t be his last ever game with the team as they have locked up the #7 seed in Class C.

The team seeded higher and had a higher tournament index.

Colton Simoes had two goals and 27 face-off wins for an 81% win percentage.

Eli Brown of Presque Isle High School had one goal and one assist.

The girl’s game was very close as well.

In the end the team won 12-10.

In the last 14 minutes of the game the Moose lost two players, they were leading by two at the time.

Although the Broncos tied it, The Lady Moose netted two goals to win it.

Houlton sophomore Reagan Wright had three goals, Hodgdon senior Shae Gilbert, Southern Aroostook freshman Aolie Watt, and Houlton sophomore Morgan Quirk each scored two goals.

It was a team effort for their fourth win of the season.

In the three years the program has been active, this is the most wins the team has had.

Over to Southern Aroostook High School where the Warriors were hosting a doubleheader against Fort Kent.

Tied up at 1 in the bottom of the first, Jakoby Porter will break the tie, DJ Kuindersma will score the go ahead run and Connor Lilley charging towards home plate, he makes contact with the catcher and the ball pops out so the runner is safe, both players stayed in the game.

3-1 Southern Aroostook in the first, the young players on this team making a difference, Brayden Peters will drive Porter home and Southern Aroostook would take a 4-1 lead into the second inning.

Fort Kent closing out their season strong, for the first time this season the team scored double digit runs in back to back games.

The Warriors held on to win 12-6 in game one of the doubleheader.

While in game two, Fort Kent’s defense and pitching came through, Fort Kent held Southern Aroostook to two runs winning 12-2.

According to the MPA’s website Fort Kent finished their season 8-8, it is not official on the website whether the team will make a playoff berth this season.

The Warriors finished their season 5-9.

The Warrior girls took the field, this run would be their seventh run scored unanswered, earlier in the game Olivia Ellingwood hit a three run double making it 6-0.

Back to back hits by Leah Hebert and Reese Doucette in the fifth inning drove in three runs to almost bring Fort Kent all the way back.

Winning pitcher Brooke Shields struck out 10 in this 7-6 Southern Aroostook win.

Fort Kent and Southern Aroostook traded 3-run first innings in game two.

Southern Aroostook gave up two more runs in the second inning giving the Lady Warriors their first lead of the afternoon.

An Olivia Ellingwood home run brought the game within one run at 5-4.

Libby Jackson added an insurance run in the bottom of the third and the bottom of the fourth is when the team pulled away.

Niah Durost doubled and Maddie Morneault drove her home, Morneault also scored.

The Lady Warriors win game two in Dyer Brook 8-5.

Kamryn Martin reportedly pitching in both games, and her pitching in the second game held the Lady Warriors away while striking out six batters.

The Presque Isle Lady Wildcats had a great final two regular season games.

They were up 15-3, and Astra Laughton brings the score to 16-3 in the fourth inning.

Via Edgecomb was the next to drive a Cat home, she will make it to first safely and runners are safe all around as Kolbie Langley scores for Presque Isle.

18-3 Presque Isle in the 4th.

Their inning was cut short as the team was up by 15 runs, John Bapst had one last opportunity to score five or more runs to keep this game going.

They were unsuccessful, Presque Isle won game one 18-3 and won game two 6-1.

The team finishes the season 8-8, a one game improvement from last year’s 7-9 record.

The Wildcats baseball team was down 4-1 in the fifth inning.

Brandon Porter got something going, but the Wildcats weren’t able to capitalize on that this inning.

Colby Haggerty batting for the Crusaders now in the 6th inning, base hit to start this inning off.

As we get to the end of the season we see a lot of team’s offense getting better and better.

The Crusaders would tack on 5 more runs while Presque Isle adds one, game one was a 12-2 win for John Bapst.

The Cats came alive in their final home game of the season, winning 13-12.

Caribou had a great start against Old Town, Edison Sleeper reached base in the leadoff spot to start the bottom of the first inning and scored.

The Coyotes scored double digit runs in both games.

They won game one 11-6 and won game two 13-3.

Caribou finished the regular season 9-7, the same as the team did last year.

However they were the 6 seed last year, as of now they are the 9th seed in Class B.

Over to the softball field where the undefeated Lady Cougars were facing Fort Fairfield.

The Lady Tigers trailing big early, making a nice play for an out here but Katahdin will score.

For the 8th game the Lady Cougars shutout their opponent, winning this game 20-0.

Katahdin is one of three teams in Class D that finished the season undefeated.

They are the #3 seed behind Machias and Penobscot Valley.

The Caribou Lady Vikings also hosted Old Town.

The Coyotes came into the contest 11-1 on a nine game winning streak.

They had one of their best offensive days of the season.

Old Town picks up two wins while in Caribou winning game one 18-2 and game two 15-1.

It’s looking like the Lady Vikings could have a spot in the preliminary matchups, those have not been released yet, as they do we will report that schedule.

Hodgdon and Madawaska played a doubleheader in Mad-Town.

Hodgdon won 2-1, while the Owls win game two 5-2.

Mattanawcook beat Houlton’s baseball team 15-2.

The Lady Lynx defeated Houlton’s softball squad 4-2.

Buffalo Hosting WY HS State Finals Rodeo: For the 2nd time in 3 weeks, the Johnson County Fairgrounds will be hosting the Wyoming High School Rodeo Circuit, but this time, it’s for the saddle and the belt buckle.

Today, tomorrow and Saturday are the State High School Finals, as cowboys and cowgirls will try to qualify for the High School National Finals Rodeo.

Competition today and tomorrow starts at 9am and 6pm.

Those that go this morning, will have their second run tomorrow night and vice-versa.

Saturday’s final round starts at 9:30am.

Cowboys and cowgirls earn points based on what place they finish in for their respective event at each rodeo, during last fall and this spring seasons.

The top 4 after Saturday will qualify for the High School National Finals Rodeo, which will take place next month at Rock Springs.

Looking at the standings, Katie Rice of Buffalo is currently 5th in the barrel racing.

Kamry and Karly Davis are 7th and 8th respectively and both within striking distance.

Kamry is 3rd in the Breakaway Roping, but it’s a tight race in that event.

Kolby Smith of Sheridan is sitting in 4th place in the Bull Riding, and Bleu Butler of Big Horn is 3rd in Goat Tying.

Sheridan Troopers Legion Baseball: The Sheridan Troopers will play their next several games in Rapid City, South Dakota beginning today.

The team is scheduled to take on the Billings 406 Flyers at 4:30pm.

Tomorrow, they play at 9am vs. Chadron, Nebraska, and at 11:30am vs. Sturgis, South Dakota.

Saturday at 9am they’ll take on Gering, Nebraska.

The rest of the schedule is dependent on what goes on in those 4 games.

Colorado Rockies Baseball: The Colorado Rockies not only won their first series of the season, the team also got its first sweep.

The team won at Miami yesterday 3-2.

The Rocks are off today and return home tomorrow to start a 6-game homestand with 3 games against the New York Mets, followed by 3 vs. San Francisco.

NBA Finals: Game 1 of the NBA finals is tonight between Indiana and Oklahoma City.

Tip off is scheduled for 6:30pm.

There is a Wyoming connection to this game.

James Johnson who played his High School ball at Cheyenne East, plays for the Pacers.

He’s been in the NBA for 15 years and this is his first shot at a championship.

NHL Stanley Cup Finals: Edmonton won at home vs. Florida 4-3 in overtime last night, in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Oilers were down 3-1 at one point, then rallied to tie the score, and then got the winner on a power play with about 31 seconds to go in the overtime period.

Game 2 is tomorrow at Edmonton starting at 6pm.

For the third time in four seasons, Irys Kline is the top of the Mid-Penn Capital.

The East Pennsboro senior and Boston University commit earned the divisional Player of the Year honor in the Mid-Penn Conference’s annual reveal of All-Division teams, as voted on by area coaches.

Middletown head coach Mike Thomas took home Coach of the Year, while Milton Hershey was recognized with the Sportsmanship Award.
