Dapelo said you can liken the competition to a ‘light version of the Olympics.’ For the Treasure Coast Board Riders, their team ages range from 14-41.”The format really brings a lot of unusual excitement with the team camaraderie,” president of the club Brandon Taylor said.Marlynn Glaub is the team’s only girl and is just 14 years old, but she is already a five-time East Coast Champion and member of the USA Junior National Surf Team.”Being from Florida, we are used to surfing super crappy waves all the time,” she said. “It is definitely not the best conditions. It is always windy, rainy. Things just get thrown at us. So, going to Australia, which is known for having really good waves, I think we might have an advantage.”Her teammate, 18-year-old Gabe Griffin, also won the East Coast Championship.”I feel like it’s going to be a really fun time,” he said. “It’s a good experience for everybody.” The coach of the Treasure Coast Board Riders Club, Michel Flores, is also competing in the competition at 41 years old.He said this competition is different from many others because rather than competing as individuals, they get to compete as a team.”It’s teamwork,” Flores said. “We help each other. It is different than a regular competition, where there is only one win. When it’s a club, everybody wins.”While room and board costs are covered by the competition the travel fees are not, so the club is hoping the community helps them make it to Australia.”As you can imagine, getting a team of four to Australia, the other end of the world, is not cheap,” Dapelo said. “So, we could use some community support.”Click here for the Treasure Coast Board Riders GoFundMe.The Club also hosts several community events to raise money and awareness about the surfing community.Click here for more information about the club and its events.
