Former WSU track and field athletes transfer to Arizona

Following Washington State’s restructuring of its track and field program, a host of Cougs hit the transfer portal. At least four of them are following their coach to Tucson, Ariz.

WSU sprints coach Gabriel Mvumvure was one of three who lost their jobs as part of the team’s shift to a “distance-focused approach,” in which the school cut field events and limited sprint and hurdle opportunities.

Mvumvure has found a new gig as the assistant track and field coach at Arizona and brought a slew of Cougs with him, including Mason Lawyer, who owns several WSU school records and competed in the 100 and 200-meter dashes along with the 400 relay at the NCAA National Championships in June.

Brooke Lyons — who holds the WSU outdoor 100 record — along with former Cougs Parker Duskin and John Paredes, also signed with Arizona, the school announced this week.
