On Fridays, high school football athletes across Southwest Florida are making the cuts.
But on Saturdays, someone else is making the cuts.
Gary Peterson is not your typical neighborhood barber.
A Lehigh Senior High School graduate in 2004, Gary served in the U.S. Navy and enrolled in barber school.
His first customer? Bishop Verot wide receiver Ayden Gonzalez.
Peterson said, “Ayden thinks Bishop is the best around here, and nobody is as good as them. I’m just telling like it is. He sees a different type of offense, a different type of scheme.”
Since cutting Gonzalez’s hair, Peterson has cut the hair of hundreds of local athletes.
Peterson said, “A lot of them are in college. Ayden’s brother is at the University of Florida. Richard Young, he was once the number one running back in the nation at Alabama. Winston Watkins, he’s at Ole Miss, he was the number one receiver in the nation about two years ago. The list goes on and on.”
When they set foot in his shop, the shavers aren’t the only ones doing the talking.
“I mean, he’s just been there as a person, he’s always a great guy to talk to, just to call when I need him,” Gonzalez said. “Every time I come in and I get a cut, we talk about ball, life, family, he always makes me laugh and he’s hilarious, probably the funniest guy I know.”
“They call it the neighborhood hero, I call it just being me. I’m going to try to keep them on the right track because I know where they been and I know where they are going, and I know where they don’t want to go,” Peterson said.
“I look forward to watching athletes grow, I look forward to watching them on TV and getting to know them in person. Knowing who they are, what they stand for, where they came from, how hard they actually worked to get there,” Peterson said.
You might just be expecting a haircut walking in, but after some time with Peterson, you’ll be ready for whatever comes next in life.
