Four School Records Shattered as Indoor Track and Field Season Kicks Off

SAGINAW & ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Golden Grizzlies indoor track and field teams for men and women concluded their initial meets of the 2024-25 season today at both Saginaw Valley and Grand Valley.

Both squads showcased remarkable performances, with 16 athletes securing top-5 finishes across the events, including three victories. Four members of the Golden Grizzlies established new school records at the SVSU Holiday Open, with two coming from field events and the other two from track events. Alex Mansfield set the all-time school mark in shot put, achieving a distance of 17.52m, while Romario Jackson leads in weight throw with a distance of 19.37m. On the track, Tyler Donovan sprinted to a time of 1:51.35 in the 800m, capturing first place in both the race and the record standings. Lastly, Ke’Vina Finch competed in the 200m, clocking a school record time of :24.66.

Finch had an outstanding day on the track, securing first place in the 200m as well as the 60m with a finishing time of 7.58. Alongside Finch, Abby Jackson and Ashley Quinn also finished in the top-5 in the 800m race, while Jamie Giese led the women’s squad in Weight Throw with a fourth-place finish, achieving a distance of 16.88m.

On the men’s side, Terrence Brooks Jr. closely followed Donovan in the 800m, finishing with a time of 1:51.93, while Wesley Hollowell secured third place in the 5000m with a time of 14:35.17.

Meanwhile, on the eastern side of the state in Saginaw, the Oakland women’s team excelled in the 3000m race, with half of the top-10 spots claimed by Golden Grizzlies. Madalyn Agren achieved a second-place finish with a time of 10:51.01, and Miriam Murrell also made it into the top-5 with a time of 11:04.52. In the Women’s Pole Vault, freshman Allison Shelton rounded out the competition in fifth place with a clearance of 3.32m.
