Freshman quarterback Julian Lewis balancing QB battle, NIL as face of Colorado's future

  • Colorado freshman quarterback Julian “JuJu” Lewis is balancing football with entrepreneurial pursuits in the NIL era.
  • Lewis has a business agent, merchandise line, and ownership stake in Fanstake.
  • While pursuing NIL deals, Lewis prioritizes football and his responsibility to the team.
  • Lewis aims to announce more equity and NIL deals by the end of June.

Colorado freshman quarterback Julian “JuJu” Lewis is an 18-year-old five-star freshman quarterback with all the on-field tools to become a successful college player and future NFL player. Lewis’s maturity doesn’t stop with the football field.

The top 2025 recruit is also setting himself up for the future with the resources available to him as a high-profile athlete in the NIL era. Lewis has a business agent, his own branded line of merchandise and an ownership stake in Fanstake, a company aiming to democratize name, image and likeness deals.

As USA TODAY Sports’ Brent Schrotenboer puts it, Lewis is “the poster child of this wild new era of college sports.”

Lewis’ father makes sure his son knows that even as a freshman in college, he has “two jobs: QB and entrepreneur.”

The young signal caller is in the midst of a tight quarterback battle with Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter, but that has not stopped Lewis from trying to maximize his off-field opportunities.

Lewis told USA TODAY Sports in an email interview that by the end of June, he hopes to announce at least three other equity deals and four additional NIL deals. Despite the heavy activity off the field, capitalizing on his stardom, Lewis has his priorities straight.

“NIL has nothing to do with my college career; football and NIL are two very separate things,” Lewis wrote to USA TODAY Sports. “Football is my priority. I have a responsibility to myself, my teammates, and my university to become the best player that I can be. NIL is going well, I’m thankful for the opportunities that I have.”

In an age of college athletics, where more and more recruits seem to be chasing the money, Lewis’s level-headedness is refreshing and should be a good sign for Colorado fans who may worry Lewis would leave CU for more money.

Lewis is mature beyond his years, and whether that turns into wins for the Colorado football team remains to be seen, but the Buffs look to have a true leader on their hands for the next few seasons and the perfect future replacement for Shedeur Sanders.

A familiar face is back in video game form for “EA Sports College Football 26.”

Washington High School alum Terry Moore, who is a senior graduate for the Duke Blue Devils, is featured in the new game, which is set for release on Monday. He was also in the “College Football 2025” version last season.

The last college video game released was “College Football 14” before EA was sued due to using players’ names, images, and likenesses (NIL) without payment. Last season, college football players were each paid $600 by EA for their NIL to be featured in the game. It has not been released how much the athletes get from this year’s game.

As was the case last year, EA Sports ranked players based on their overall performance the season before. Those players each have an OVR rating, which could rise and fall during the season based on their performances.

GameSpot was one of the first to get a look at the game ahead of its release. Moore, who plays safety, is ranked among the top five players at his position. The game breaks down the position this way:

1. Caleb Downs, Ohio State (96 OVR)

2. Dillon Thieneman, Oregon (93)

T3. Rod Moore, Michigan (92)

T3. Bud Clark, TCU (92)

T3. Terry Moore, Duke (92)

Moore said last year when it was announced he would be in the video game that he was thrilled when he heard the news.

“I always dreamed of being in a video game, hoping one day it would be Madden. It is incredible that the opportunity came early,” Moore told The Washington Daily News. “About every single one of my teammates is playing this game, we enjoy playing online against each other.”

Moore will be in Washington on July 19 to host his football camp. It’s the third straight year of the camp, which will be held from 9-11 a.m. at Washington High School.

Report

On Monday, a Leon County judge denied former Florida State men’s basketball head coach Leonard Hamilton‘s motion to dismiss an NIL-related lawsuit against him, per The Athletic‘s Matt Baker. In the hearing, they set a tentative trial date of August 2026.

In December of last year, Darin Green Jr.Josh NickelberryPrimo SpearsCam’Ron FletcherDe’Ante Green and Jalen Warley alleged Hamilton promised each of them $250,000 in NIL payments from the coach’s “business partners,” per the complaint. The players reportedly never received payments from Hamilton, Florida State or any other party.

The initial complaint detailed a team-wide boycott that occurred during a practice ahead of Florida State’s game against Duke on Feb. 17. The complaint also included multiple text message exchanges between players and Hamilton and players and Will Cowen, an executive with one of Florida State’s NIL collectives.

After the players walked out of the practice ahead of the Duke game, Hamilton assured the players they would be paid the following week, per the complaint. Florida State ultimately lost to Duke, 76-67. Players were worried over taxes, rent and car notes, per the complaint.

In April, The Field of 68 legal analyst Mitch Gilfillan reported that three of the six plaintiffs were no longer pursuing the lawsuit. Nonetheless, it appears the other three plaintiffs have not had a change of heart and are pushing forward.

None of the six players who were involved in the lawsuit are still on Florida State’s roster. Four of them entered the transfer portal, while two of them had no more eligibility.

Leonard Hamilton announced his resignation in February. He is the winningest head coach in program history and the fifth-winningest head coach in ACC history.

“I am deeply thankful for the tremendous support of our fans, alumni, and everyone associated with Florida State throughout my time here,” Hamilton said. “I am proud of the quality of the young men that it was my privilege to lead, for their faith in this program and in their belief in the philosophy that we tried to instill in them over the years. I have been blessed beyond words for the opportunity and the experience we’ve had here.

“My family and I truly love this place, this institution, and its people. I’m very fortunate to be able to have given this job my all with no regrets. Every head coach inherits a legacy and is obligated to leave the job better than they inherited it. I’m very proud of what we have been able to accomplish here over the last 23 seasons.”

Louisville basketball’s Mikel Brown Jr. just completed his second gold medal run with Team USA. The Cardinals’ incoming freshman defeated Germany on Sunday afternoon in the 2025 FIBA U19 Men’s World Cup, and Brown was a key piece as he made the FIBA U19 World Cup All-Star Five.

Brown led Team USA in points, assists, efficiency, and made 3-pointers in their seven games, and while he might have been blatantly snubbed for the MVP, Louisville fans saw tremendous upside from the 5-star guard. The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 14.9 points, 6.1 assists, and 2.1 rebounds per game while shooting 46.7 percent from the field and 47.6 percent from downtown and controlling the pace of the game.

The Cardinals’ superstar had many highlights during his gold medal run, but one that went absolutely viral was his dunk attempt against New Zealand on July 5.

Mikel Brown Jr. teases another level he’s ready to unlock for Louisville basketball

Some fans (Kentucky) may see it as a missed dunk, but the rest of the nation sees this insane clip as a 6-foot-5 185, 185-pound guard soaring through the air and almost landing the best dunk of 2025. Brown displayed his pure athleticism in this clip and is showing the world that even as a point guard, he has the capability to dunk over and on defenders, ask Kentucky commit Malachi Moreno.

Brown showed the world he can shoot from beyond the arc at an exceptionally high rate, while controlling the pace of the game. He was also creating space for himself and his teammates and finishing at the rim through contact. However, adding the ability to soar through the air like he did in this clip is him giving the ACC and the nation a brief glimpse of what is to come in 2025-26.

This dunk attempt is far more than just a missed dunk. Brown is going to be a force to be reckoned with for Louisville basketball this upcoming season, and he just showed he has the skills and leadership to lead a program to a championship.

Brown’s gold medal run had Kentucky and Duke fans admitting that he is the best point guard in the nation. He also had experts stating that he wouldn’t just be the best incoming freshman but might also be one of the best players in college basketball.

The 5-star phenom committing to Louisville isn’t just going to help this program in 2025-26, but it will change this program forever. Louisville basketball is back, and it might be better than ever. The Cardinals are now in the lead for 5-star recruits in the 2026 cycle, and it goes back to Brown being the first major recruit to give Kelsey a chance.

Brown’s athleticism and ability to dunk on defenders are becoming new skills, and adding that to his 3-point shooting, court vision, and elite playmaking skills makes it clear that he will be an unstoppable force.

Brown is ranked as high as No. 6 in the 2025 cycle and the No. 1 point guard, and he is the second-highest commit in Louisville history. Louisville fans are counting down the days for their season to begin, but more specifically until that blockbuster showdown on Nov. 11 against the Kentucky Wildcats from KFC Yum! Center.

Urban Meyer names college football program to ‘watch out for’ this season

Last season, Penn State made its first appearance in the College Football Playoff, but fell short against Notre Dame in the semifinals after wins over Boise State and SMU in the first two rounds.

Despite losing multiple impact contributors to the NFL Draft, the Nittany Lions return multiple key players, making this program one of the preseason favorites to make another run in the College Football Playoff.

During an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer highlighted Penn State as one of his teams to watch for next season.

“Penn State is following the lead of the Wolverines and the Buckeyes,” Meyer said. “And that is, they have more seniors… Think about this, Colin. I never had the chance to coach fourth-year players. If I did, it was very rare. The difference between a fourth-year player and a rookie, or freshman, is night and day. You’re coaching grown-a** men. That’s a men’s locker room compared to a young person’s.”

Meyer highlighted the return of quarterback Drew Allar as one of the most important aspects of this team’s potential. He even went a step further, calling the Nittany Lions one of the most talented teams in the nation.

“Watch out for Penn State, man,” Meyer continued. “If Drew Allar can really improve as a quarterback, I agree with you, they’ve got the best backfield, I don’t think it’s close, in the country. They’ve got an offensive line that they can’t wait to get on the field. I think Penn State, Texas, and Ohio State are the most talented.”

Over the past two seasons, Allar has recorded 5,958 passing yards and 49 passing touchdowns. He led the Big Ten in passing touchdowns in 2023, while ranking top five in the conference in passing yards both seasons. Allar’s success did not translate to the postseason as he failed to surpass 200 passing yards in all three CFP games.

Allar’s success has led to one of the highest NIL valuations in college football, ranking No. 8 nationally. He has the highest NIL valuation among Penn State players with a projected valuation of $3.1 million. Running back Nick Singleton also has a projected NIL value of $1.8 million, according to On3.

As Meyer noted, Penn State’s running back room will be one of the most talented in the nation. Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen return after surpassing 1,000 rushing yards last season. The duo has combined for over 4,000 career rushing yards and has a chance to reset the record book with another big season.

Penn State opens the 2025 college football season on Aug. 30 against Nevada. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS.
