In the realm of skateboarding, Jason Carney embodies authenticity. A renowned figure in San Diego’s skate scene, his impact on the culture is truly commendable. He’s a lifer in every sense, and nowadays, he contributes to the local community through his skate shop, Slappy’s Garage, which has locations in downtown San Diego and Linda Vista.

The latest episode of CORE offers a thorough exploration of Carney’s path, tracing his initial steps in skateboarding to his daily operations running the shops now. He continues to motivate us all! Don’t miss it:

Managing a skate shop isn’t a trivial endeavor. It’s tough. It’s demanding. Yet, it’s immensely fulfilling. While there may be more skateboarders today than ever—and indeed more shops than before—the challenges are very real. Thanks a bunch, Internet!

That being said, it’s people like Carney who are out there on the front lines ensuring the dream stays alive. “That’s my calling,” he states. “To empower others to pursue their aspirations.” And he’s doing exactly that. If anyone embodies the essence of a core skate shop vibe, it’s Jason. Step into either of Slappy’s locations, and you’ll see what I mean.

Outside of skateboarding and business management, Carney is just an all-around great guy. He sincerely cares about his community, his staff, his friends. He supports them and plays a pivotal role in helping them realize their dreams, just as he was able to. It’s incredibly inspiring.

I’ve admired Carney for ages, and just when I thought I had a complete picture, I watched this and discovered even more about this icon. We truly need more individuals like Jason in the skateboarding world. Simultaneously, we should all appreciate his significant presence within the culture. If you haven’t hit play yet, do so now.

Show love for your local skate shop! Keep the passion alive, Carney. Thank you for everything.
