Gael Monfils is in the twilight of his career aged 38 and he will look back on his career playing professional tennis with some fondness.

The French performer has reached two Grand Slam semi-finals in his career but never quite managed to get over the line and claim one of the big prizes.

Monfils has won 12 career singles titles and he will hope to cause a few upsets next year when the ATP Tour gets back underway in January.

Ahead of 2025, Monfils has been answering some questions from fans on social media – with all of the game’s pressing matters openly discussed by the player.

Gael Monfils shares where he thinks Ben Shelton can be in the world rankings

Shelton is one of the game’s top talents and he’s slowly but surely developing into a top player on the ATP Tour.

The American player had some good wins in 2024, although he might be disappointed with his showings in the Grand Slam events, failing to reach the second week in three of the four.

Shelton has been a semi-finalist at the US Open previously and in 2023 he also reached the last eight at the Australian Open.

Monfils was asked by a fan where he sees Shelton being positioned in the future – asking the Frenchman what he felt the youngster could achieve in professional tennis.

He said on X: “Top 10 for sure, he plays incredible, I can’t wait to see his prime.”

Shelton can enjoy 2025 breakthrough

The 22-year-old isn’t a million miles away from the world’s top 10 and currently sits in 21st place in the world rankings.

That gives him something to build upon and with American tennis currently in a better place, that should give him the confidence to kick on in 2025.

Shelton has the tools to shine and compete with the better players in the world and he will want to start showcasing that a little bit more in the bigger competitions.

It’s hard not to agree with Monfils with his suggestion that Shelton’s prime could be extremely special and it will be fascinating to see what he can achieve during his career.
