The Gophers, who lost a heartbreaking 89-88 decision to Ohio State in double overtime in their most recent home game on Jan. 6, rallied from a 40-31 halftime deficit to secure the win. It was Minnesota’s first victory against a Top 25 team in head coach Ben Johnson‘s tenure. The last time the Gophers beat a Top 25 team was a 71-68 home win versus No. 24 Purdue on Feb. 11, 2021. The last time the Gophers defeated the Wolverines at Williams Arena was Jan. 16, 2021, a 75-57 victory.

Michigan used an 8-0 run to take a 10-5 lead before Asuma scored on consecutive possessions to cut it to 10-9 with 13:57 left in the half. The Wolverines once again stretched the lead to five points, but Trey Edmonds banked one off the glass, Garcia scored on a breakaway dunk, and Odukale gave the Gophers a 15-14 lead with a fast-break layup. Michigan’s third three-pointer put it back in the lead midway through the half, and its fourth made it a 20-15 advantage. Mitchell Jr. scored on back-to-back possessions and Frank Mitchell’s layup cut the deficit to 22-21. Another 5-0 Michigan run extended the lead to six points before Mitchell Jr. knocked down the Gophers’ first three-pointer in 11 tries to cut it to 27-24. Patterson connected on an ear-ringing three-pointer from the top of the key with 50 seconds left, putting the Gophers up 69-68. Garcia hit a pair of free throws with 7.4 seconds on the clock, tying the score, and Michigan’s attempt at a game-winner was off the mark to send the game to overtime.
Mitchell Jr. hit from beyond the arc and Patterson scored along the baseline to put Minnesota up, 76-75, early in OT, and Garcia’s floater in the lane put the Gophers up three.
