Girl's golf squad secures spot in state tournament

The girls’ golf squad from Scottsboro organized the Section 4 sectional golf tournament at Goosepond Colony on the previous Monday, emerging victorious and securing a spot at the state level.

The competing section featured schools from Albertville, Arab, Bob Jones, DAR, Douglas, Etowah, Fairview, Fort Payne, Gadsden, Grissom, Guntersville, Hazel Green, Huntsville, Saks, Scottsboro, Sparkman, and Westbrook.

Scottsboro clinched the top position with a score of 273, while Grissom followed in second place at 296. Both teams have earned their places in the state competition in Mobile.

Individuals who qualified included Leslie Ledbetter of Hazel Green with a score of 77 and Ashleigh Hicks from Westbrook with an 83.

Representing Scottsboro individually were Ashley Looney and Beth Bratton with an 85, whereas Heather Armstrong recorded a 103 and Beth Bailey finished with a 105.

Grissom’s lineup comprised Jayce Vaughn, who shot a 94, Rachel Beard with a score of 98, Angela Goodnight at 104, and Amelia Thomas with a 113.

Other competing teams with known scores included Sparkman at 302, Hazel Green at 307, Arab at 308, Bob Jones at 336, DAR at 341, and Fort Payne at 359.

The Scottsboro team is set to head to Mobile on May 12-13 for the state golf championship.

Supporters interested in aiding the team with travel costs can purchase raffle tickets offered by the boys and girls golf teams. Each ticket is priced at $10 and grants the purchaser a complimentary meal at Captain D’s.

The drawing for the winner will take place on May 21, with the prize being 365 meals at Captain D’s. Tickets are available through any golf team members or coaches Alicia Bell or Mike Benson.
