The Desert Edge Scorpions triumphed over the Cactus Cobras with a score of 28-19.
PHOENIX — The Desert Edge Scorpions from Goodyear defeated Glendale’s Cactus Cobras to claim victory in the 5A State Championship Game held in Tempe.
The Scorpions secured a win against the Cobras with a final score of 28-19.
The Cactus Cobras of Glendale (10-3, 4-1 in the 5A Desert West region) entered the championship game following an upset victory over the top-ranked ALA-Gilbert North (9-4, 3-2 in the 5A Northeast Valley region), winning 38-35 in the semifinals last Friday evening.
Goodyear’s Desert Edge Scorpions, ranked No. 7 (9-4, 4-1 in the 5A Desert West region), appeared in the 5A title match for the second consecutive year, having avenged their earlier loss to No. 6 Verrado (10-3, 4-1 in the 5A Desert West region) by winning 27-14 in the semifinals just three weeks prior.
Cactus previously fell to the Higley Knights in the 2022 5A championship, losing 41-21.
Desert Ridge was defeated by Higley in the 2023 5A championship game, with a score of 42-41.
This matchup marked the 10th encounter between these regional rivals, according to MaxPreps, where Desert Edge leads the series 5-4, having triumphed over Cactus earlier this season, 21-6.
