Gorillas Throwers, Distance Runners Open Outdoor Season

LAWRENCE — A handful of Pittsburg State University track & field athletes opened the 2024 outdoor season last weekend by competing at the University of Kansas Jayhawk Spring Fling and the Dr. Dan Caprioglio Early Bird Invitational hosted by Colorado State University-Pueblo.

The Gorillas sent throwers to Lawrence and distance runners to Pueblo.

Brennan Boord posted a personal-best in the men’s discus throw at KU with a best mark of 180 feet, 5 inches. It was the sixth-best mark in Pitt State history and currently sits No. 3 in NCAA Division II following the first week of competition. Boord also secured a PR in the hammer throw (192-4), logging the ninth-best mark in school history.
Caleb Calvin (225-0), Maddox Johnson (209-6) and Reed Mason (198-11) posted solid marks in the men’s javelin throw. Calvin is currently ranked No. 2, Johnson No. 9 and Mason No. 22 in Division II. Jack Haukap tossed the hammer 204-0 to record the third best mark in DII this season.
In the women’s action, Olivia Vanderweide (155-1), Gracie Riner (134-7) and Sheby Sogaard (129-8) also posted solid debuts in the javelin. Vanderweide is currently ranked No. 2 in DII.
Abby Lasiter (168-4) and Addy Hinterweger (165-11) also had strong debuts in the hammer throw.
At Pueblo, Dylan Sprecker (3:44.60) and Mason Strader (3:44.95) posted fast times in the men’s 1,500 meters. The duo is currently ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in Division II this season.
Kate Strader also posted the second-fastest time in DII this spring in the women’s 1,500 meters (4:23.12).
