Grace Gilbreth, Tommy Mellott Named Montana State’s Big Sky Scholar Athletes

Bozeman, Mont. (July 16, 2025) – A pair of Montana State star student-athletes earned Big Sky Scholar-Athlete honors on Wednesday, conference commissioner Tom Wistrcill announced.
 
Walter Payton Award-winning quarterback Tommy Mellott from Butte and record-setting distance runner Grace Gilbreth from Bozeman stand as Montana State’s representatives in the group featuring the top male and female student-athletes from each Big Sky school. To be eligible for this award, the student-athlete must have exhausted athletic eligibility and/or be a member of the graduating class, earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0) scale, participated for at least two years in a Big Sky-sponsored sport at his or her institution, and earn at least one varsity letter.
 
Mellott graduated with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average (out of 4.0) in financial engineering, and during his storied career won every national FCS offensive player of the year award during his senior year. The Butte native also earned the 2023 Doris Robinson FCS Scholar-Athlete Award.
 
Gilbreth, from Bozeman, graduated with a degree in economics with a cumulative 3.98 GPA. She earned multiple All-Big Sky honors in cross country and indoor and outdoor track, and set a school record in the 3,000 m steeplechase.
