Work has begun on a new recreation and athletic center in Greer.
The city is building a 200,000-square-foot facility dedicated to athletics, recreation and community connection.
The new $60 million Sports & Events Center, spanning about 26 acres running from S.C. 14 to S. Buncombe Road, will host adult and youth athletic programs such as basketball, volleyball, and wrestling, and will have the ability to accommodate pickleball, futsal and other popular activities, according to a news release.
The property will feature indoor and outdoor walking tracks, multi-sport simulators, and event rental space. Groundbreaking guests will get a sneak peek at new design renderings and the full site plan.
“Athletics and recreation are deeply ingrained in the spirit of Greer, and the new Sports & Events Center will be a game changer for our diverse and growing city,” said Mayor Rick Danner in the release. “We’re building a state-of-the-art facility that will meet the recreation needs of the City of Greer now and into the future. The scope and scale of this project are unrivaled in this region and promise to make Greer a destination for champions at home and across the nation.”
Upstate-born Olympic volleyball player Anna Hall joined Mayor Rick Danner and other dignitaries at a recent groundbreaking event.
The facility is slated to open in 2027.
