MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) – Esports has become the fastest-growing sport in the world, and those involved with the program at Minot State believe they are setting the bar.

Earlier this spring they moved into their new space in the remodeled Hartnett Hall.

Since then, the program made it to playoffs, competed in national leagues, and had some undefeated seasons.

For athletes like Marah Betterley, esports has helped her get out of her comfort zone. She said women are a minority in the program, but that does not stop her from being a team player.

“Definitely kind of cracked me open, and I started talking to a lot more people,” said Betterley.

It began as a club in 2022 but quickly evolved into a varsity league.

Director Ethan Valentine said there were only eight students at their first event. Now, there are close to 40 competitive athletes and more than 200 members.

“You sit in a dark room for 15 hours a day playing a game— that’s not what we’re trying to do here. We’re trying to build well-rounded leaders,” said Valentine.

The athletes said the best part of the team is building camaraderie and gaining leadership roles.

“Especially if you’re an introvert like me, being able to be on a team and be heard by your other players is really important,” said Betterley.

Athlete Luke Curren said their team faced a tough loss in their first tournament of the semester, but he said that only made them stronger.

“I think we really got over that hurdle by not only just getting to know each other, but humor plays a large part of it,” said Curren.

Valentine, who is also a faculty member, said he is focusing on emphasizing academics and developing a strong community.

“Who gets along, who plays well together, who enjoys each other’s company, who enjoys spending time together,” said Valentine.

He said careers in esports are rapidly growing too, and they even plan on creating a major tied to esports.

Take Briana Romfo for example, she’s a recent graduate this spring and is now the head coach.

“Some students don’t even know we are here on campus. We just had someone tour the other day and they’re like, ‘I didn’t know this was here,’” said Romfo.

The program is hoping to compete in its first national competition next spring.

The coach said they play Valorant, League of Legends and Overwatch to name a few.

They said the program has also kicked off scholarship opportunities this year.

They also collaborate with Minot High Esports and many areas across the state to bring athletes to Minot to compete.
