Hauser wins 1st demo derby in youth class | News, Sports, Jobs

NEW ULM — The Brown County Fair held its first day of the demo derby on Thursday, with four classes crashing together to see who could be the last one standing.

The Youth Class was up first, with four entries. Sixteen-year-old Masyn Hauser came out on top in the quickest bout of the night for his first demo derby win.

“It feels good after so long a time,” Hauser said.

The New Ulm native had been participating in events for two years before his first victory.

“[Participating in the demo derby] has been a goal,” Hauser said. “I’ve always wanted to do it. But my parents always held me back. But then they gave up.”

Zach Janke came in second, along with earning the hardest hitter bonus, while Tilken Fruhwirth took third. Corey Crews place fourth.

Next up were the Vans. The derby came down to the final three vehicles manned by Kyle Bathke, Brandon Paul and Colton Hewitt. In the end, it was Bathke that made it out of the battle, with Paul taking second and Hewitt placing third. Dawson Harty earned fourth and the hardest hitter, and Francisco Montalvo placed fifth.

The Midsize class was next to go, with Chase Kerkhoff taking home the top spot. Kaiden Berg, Cody Daray, Travis Schneider and Jake Johnson also placed, with Kaiden Berg taking the hardest hitter.

The 80s Class was the largest to go on the day, taking the largest portion of the two-and-a-half hour event. The first fire stop was during the event as one of the derby cars caught fire in the undercarriage, but the vehicle was able to continue after the stop. Cody Gains won the event and the hardest hitter, followed by Dustin Reinhart, Robert Engleking, Peyton Engleking and Andy Shutrop.

Finally, as the night fell, the Trucks Class began. The final two standing here Gunnar Brooks and Chase Kerkhoff, and the two battled for some time before Kerkhoff’s vehicle quit, making Brooks the winner. Kerkhoff earned the Hardest Hitter as a consolation prize. Levi Franta placed third, followed by Tate Isaacson and Dusty Scharbach.
