CARROLLTOWN, Pa. – With their success in the Little League Softball World Series, the West Suburban 12-Under girls team has put Cambria County’s small towns, including Carrolltown, on the map.
ESPN2’s telecast of West Suburban’s 4-0 shutout victory Saturday over Southwest included a clip of a jubilant crowd at the American Legion in Carrolltown watching the girls win the Purple Bracket title game at the Little League Softball World Series in Greenville, North Carolina.
About 80 people, including players’ family as well as community members who’ve been drawn into the action purely as fans, packed the American Legion at 107 North Main St.
The win Saturday sends the team to Sunday’s championship game versus Indiana at 3 p.m. The game is scheduled to be telecast on ABC.
“We are so proud of all of them,” Kat Hemming said.
Hemming, a great aunt of West Suburban shortstop Kennedy Fees, watched between serving food during the watch party at the American Legion.
“They are all little superstars, on and off the field,” she said, fighting back tears as she reflected on the girls’ ability to rise above the everyday challenges of their young lives to compete on the nationally televised stage.
For avid sports fans, including Brenda Maurer, of Ebensburg, watching the Little League girls is more exciting than watching professional athletes.
“The best thing is they are doing it for the love of the sport and for each other,” Maurer said. “They are a little family, having each other’s backs. It’s fantastic, and it’s from this little town. Who would have thought?”
Queen’s iconic song “We Are the Champions” played in the American Legion as the crowd celebrated. Many people stayed in their seats, watching with tears in their eyes as sportscasters conducted post-game interviews with players.
Ashley Deckard, who operates the American Legion’s kitchen with her husband, Stephen Deckard, supplied footage of the crowd in the dining room to ESPN as the network requested.
“It’s crazy that little Carrolltown would be put on the map,” she said. “It’s these girls – we are very proud of our girls. The community has been rallying behind them during this once-in-a-lifetime event.”
