The Havre boys’ basketball team was plus-23 in the scoring column in the second half to boost themselves past Miles City, (63-51) in the season opener this past Saturday. New Media Broadcasters asked head coach Walynn Burgess where the tides turned for his team and he emphasized a third quarter surge.
“It was just the third quarter in general,” Burgess said. “The boys really responded to our halftime talk.”
“(Senior center) Brayden Ereaux getting us four offensive rebounds just in that quarter alone (gave) us extra opportunities,” Burgess continued. “(Junior guard) Dax Ostwalt (gave us) some extra possessions.”
“In the early season hoops, you’re going to have your uglies (and) you’re going to have your really goods,” Burgess said. “I just thought (the players) responded the right way and (I’m) just glad we came out of there with a win.”
Burgess and the Ponies will have two more tests this week against Lockwood on the road and East Helena at home. The seventh-year coach of Havre High shared his knowledge of the Lions first and said what kind of test it will be to go into another hostile environment at the beginning of the season.
“The Lockwood team (is) ultra-athletic (and have) a bunch of guys that play a lot of basketball,” Burgess said. “You go down on their home floor on a long road trip and it’s going to come down to two or three plays.”
“Who’s more ready in the early season?” Burgess continued. “We respect the heck out of those guys and we understand what they’re capable of.”
East Helena will be coming in on a second of a back-to-back after opening their campaign at home against Hardin. Burgess said that the Vigilantes are much improved from a season ago having seen them this summer at tournaments.
“We turn around to get ready for an East Helena team (that has) really improved,” Burgess said. “(We) just know those guys are going to come out and play with a hard hat on.”
“They’ve gotten a lot better,” Burgess continued. “They’re going to push you to your limits.”
“We’re really excited about being at home,” Burgess said. “Then you also get nervous at the same time at the same time because it’s like, ‘Man, it’s the home opener.’”
Havre boys’ basketball will be the back end of doubleheaders on Thursday in Lockwood around 7:30pm followed by the home opener against East Helena around 5:30pm. Both sets of games will be broadcast on KOJM-610AM, 98.3FM, and HiLineToday.com with Noah Friedman calling the Saturday games.
