Hampton Roads faces a heat advisory with temperatures potentially reaching 107 degrees by Thursday afternoon.

NORFOLK, Va. — Hampton Roads is shifting gears from flooding concerns to a heat advisory.

Afternoon highs are forecast to soar into the middle and upper 90s across much of the area on Thursday and Friday.

Combine those temperatures with dew points that will stay stubbornly high — well into the 70s — and the humidity will make it feel even hotter than what the thermometer shows.

A heat advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, covering a swath of the East Coast from New Jersey to Virginia Beach.

Heat index values could reach 107 degrees by Thursday afternoon.

The risk for additional slow-moving storms and localized downpours will linger in the forecast over the next several days, but unlike earlier this week, the activity is not expected to be nearly as widespread or as persistent.

Anyone planning to spend time outdoors late this week should take precautions: drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and keep an eye on those more vulnerable to heat stress, such as children, the elderly, and pets.
