The First Rounds of the 2025 NCAA D1 Track and Field Championships are ready to begin on May 27 with two regional meets. The East Regional will be held in Jacksonville, Florida, while the West Regional has settled in College Station, Texas.

Each individual event features the top 48 D1 collegiate athletes, and the West Regional in particular will showcase the talent harbored by the top teams in the nation, like Southern California, Arkansas, and the site host, Texas A&M.

Southern California is currently ranked No. 1 in men’s track and field and No. 4 in women’s, according to the latest updates from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Now that the previous NCAA D1 Men’s Track and Field champion of the past three years, Florida, is seemingly out of the picture, a new team hopes to rise to the occasion.

Following the completion of the First Rounds, 12 athletes and 12 relay teams will be selected based on their performance and sent to the Championships in June.

Both of SouthCoast’s boys volleyball teams — GNB Voc-Tech and New Bedford — have qualified for the 2025 MIAA state tournament and will compete in Div. 1 this year.

The Whalers finished the regular season 18-2 and beat rival GNB Voc-Tech in both meetings.

Here’s a look at the two local teams and their opening matchups:

GNB Voc-Tech

Record: 10-10

Seed: No. 33 in Div. 1

Opening matchup: Visits No. 32 Malden (14-6) in the Div. 1 Preliminary Round at a date and time to be determined.

Outlook: The Bears, who played an independent schedule this year, are looking to get back on track in the playoffs after ending the season with 5 losses in their last 6 games. They take on a Malden team that they split with during the regular season, winning 3-1 on April 18 and losing 3-1 on May 1. Senior Jack Gwozdz has been Voc-Tech’s top hitter this year as well as a force in the back row with his digs.

New Bedford

Record: 18-2

Seed: No. 13 in Div. 1

Opening matchup: Hosts No. 20 Boston College High (11-7) in the Div. 1 Round of 32 at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night.

Outlook: The red-hot Whalers ride an 11-game win streak into the playoffs. Their only losses this season have come against Needham (3-0 on March 28) and Barnstable (3-1 on April 14). They went undefeated (14-0) in the first season of the Big Patriot League to capture the championship. New Bedford has been powered at the net by a trio of seniors in Nick Rosa, Amir Salih Tavares and Nyron Foster while Abner Cun has spread the offense around as the team’s senior setter.

Former Blue Hose Pitcher Daniel Eagen Finding Success in Professional Baseball

HILLSBORO, Oregon – Former Presbyterian College right-hander Daniel Eagen is continuing to make the Blue Hose proud as he climbs the ranks of professional baseball. Now pitching for the Hillsboro Hops, the High-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Eagen has shown significant progress in his first professional season.

While still attending PC, Eagen spent the summer of 2023 with the Greenville Flyboys in the Appalachian League, posting a 4.39 ERA across nine appearances and four starts. He struck out 24 batters in 26.2 innings while recording a save and gaining valuable experience in a developmental league filled with rising talent.

After wrapping up his collegiate career with the Blue Hose in the spring of 2024, Eagen was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks and began his journey through the minor league system. Following offseason training, strength camps, and early spring work at the Arizona Complex League, Eagen used the fall and winter to recover, build consistency, and adjust to the routine of professional baseball. That preparation has paid off in 2025, where he is now thriving in the most competitive environment he’s faced yet.

Since joining Hillsboro, Eagen has made seven starts, with a 2-2 record, posting a 2.86 ERA over 34.2 innings. He’s struck out an impressive 48 batters while limiting opponents to a .182 batting average and carrying a 1.18 WHIP.

One of his most impressive performances came on April 17, when he pitched 6.0 innings against the Spokane Indians, striking out 12 batters and allowing no earned runs on just three hits.

A week later, he delivered an immaculate inning against the Tri-City Dust Devils, striking out all three batters on nine pitches.

“I’m honestly surprised to see the strikeout numbers climbing with the level of talent up here,” Eagen said. “But it comes down to being able to throw multiple pitches for strikes and putting them where I want. Everyone at this level is here to get better and develop their game.”

EagenEagen credits much of his success to his time at Presbyterian College, where he developed under the guidance of head coach Elton Pollock and pitching coach Blake Miller. From his freshman year, the coaching staff believed in his potential, instilling confidence and providing in-game coaching that prepared him for the next level.

“The coaching I got at PC was unbelievable,” Eagen said. “Coach P and Coach Miller were constantly helping us grow. They gave me the confidence to make adjustments when I struggled, and they worked hard to get scouts to come see us play.”

“More than anything,” Eagen said, “PC gave me the confidence to become the best version of myself!”

Now in Oregon with the Hops, Eagen is focused on continuing to improve while contributing to a winning team.

“I love where I’m at. We’ve got a great group of guys, and I’m just trying to do my job and help us win,” he said. “The goal is always to move up, but I’m happy with where I’m at right now.”

He remains close with former PC teammates, regularly checking in with fellow alumni like Charlie McDaniel, Joel Dragoo, and Brody Fahr, who are also pursuing professional careers.

Daniel Eagen is the ultimate competitor,” Said Presbyterian’s head coach Elton Pollock. “I’m not sure we fully appreciated his innate ability to carry the team at times or his unmatched will to win. Coach Miller did an excellent job with his pitching development and creating an internal competition between he and Charlie McDaniel, who is now excelling in the San Francisco Giants organization. It’s really nice to see his skill set play out at the professional level.”

Alabama’s Ryan Williams and Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith are the cover athletes for EA Sports College Football 26, the video-game developer announced Tuesday.

The electric sophomore wide receivers were picked for the second edition of the franchise’s reboot. Last year’s game was the first in 11 years and was among the best-selling video games in 2024.

Williams and Smith are posed together on the standard cover, while the deluxe edition also includes other players, coaches, mascots and former cover stars Reggie Bush, Tim Tebow and Denard Robinson.

The ‘26 edition will test if the franchise still has the same staying power it had when it was released annually in the early 2000s.

For the players who are featured in the game, it will certainly remain popular. Williams said in a statement released by EA Sports that the cover was “a dream come true,” and Smith called it “a tremendous privilege.”

“I’m proud to represent Ohio State alongside Coach (Ryan) Day while carrying the Buckeye legacy forward, celebrating the passion of our fans and the tradition of this incredible program,” Smith said.

Williams and Smith broke onto the national scene in 2024 with their miraculous catches on the biggest stages.

Williams’ spinning TD grab to help beat then-No. 2 Georgia looked like it belonged in a video game. It was one of many wowing plays from the young receiver. Williams finished his freshman season with 48 receptions for 865 yards and eight receiving touchdowns.

Smith was a major part of the Buckeyes’ run to a national championship. He regularly hauled in one-handers that decimated the confidence of his defenders. In a CFP quarterfinals win over top-seeded Oregon, Smith had seven receptions, 187 yards and two touchdowns. He finished his freshman year with 76 catches, 1,315 yards and 15 receiving touchdowns.
