MARSHALL NOTES

  • Marshall enters its second season under Head Coach Morgan Zerkle. The 2017 All-American for the Herd led the team that season with a .476 average en route to a NCAA Tournament appearance. The Herd has made two NCAA Regionals in its history (2013 & 2017).
  • Zerkle – the Milton, West Virginia native – has been drafted to the AUSL’s Bandits this past January, alongside Assistant Coach Sydney McKinney.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Softball will get its first crack in 2025 at both a weekend series and a traditional doubleheader when it travels to Charleston, S.C. to start a three-game set against the College of Charleston on Friday, Feb. 14.

  • The Herd went 1-4 at the prestigious NFCA Leadoff Classic to begin 2025, with three of the defeats coming to Power-4 opposition. Leading Marshall was one of the team’s 11 newcomers, Paige Simpson, who hit .500 to earn NFCA All-Tournament Team.
  • Among the team’s 12 returners include 2024 Preseason Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year Brooklyn Ulrich. The redshirt junior led MU with seven hits in its opening weekend.
  • The Herd relied primarily on a trio of pitchers in Clearwater, with Penn State transfer Paige Maynard earning a win in relief.

  • The Cougars were led in the opening weekend by Ohio University transfer Austy Miller. The junior infielder hit .364 with four hits.
  • CofC pitcher Kendall Thackston led the Cougars to a complete-game victory with a seven inning complete-game performance allowing one run.

The Herd will play three against the Cougars before playing a single-game against Charleston Southern on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 12:30 p.m.

  • Charleston Southern went 1-4 to start 2025, and like the Cougars were at home to begin the season.
  • Sophomore Carson Sandvig led the Buccaneers with six hits in 12 at-bats including a triple and a home run.
  • Prior to facing the Herd Sunday, CSU will hosts Central Connecticut State and UNC Wilmington Friday and Saturday.
