Hayden Bird can be reached at hayden.bird@globe.com.“Celtics City” was produced by former “Boston Sports Guy” and Ringer founder/CEO Bill Simmons, along with Connor Schell (the duo who originally produced ESPN’s noted “30 For 30″ series). The project is a partnership of HBO Sports Documentaries, Ringer Films, and Words + Pictures.

Celtics fans will have to circle March 3 on their calendars — an unintentional 3/3 reference to Larry Bird — for when HBO’s new documentary series about the team premieres.Along with soundbites from current Celtics like Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and head coach Joe Mazzulla, clips shown in the trailer include interviews with Doc Rivers, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Bob Cousy. Notably, former head coach Rick Pitino is also briefly shown, indicating that he was interviewed for the project.Titled “Celtics City,” the docu-series will explore the championship-laden history of Boston’s NBA team, its many stars, and its impact off the court. The first trailer dropped on Wednesday, teasing numerous subplots and interviews.“It took some real thought to figure out, ‘How do you tell the definitive history of the Celtics but also do it through the lens of a bigger story than just basketball?’” Simmons told Boston Globe and Boston.com columnist Chad Finn during a Nov. 2024 interview.

In addition, the rival Los Angeles Lakers are represented, with James Worthy and Jeannie Buss also making appearances in the involved trailer.
