Remember Pipestone Area Schools’ 2023-24 boys basketball season?
The Arrows scored a school-record 114 points in a single game versus Windom, and also tallied 94 during a Section 3AA playoff contest. Even at Windom’s last campaign, PAS put up 89 points on Feb. 8.
That’s now a distant memory.
The Arrows struggled to find rhythm on offense — and Windom was ahead by as many as 25 points (37-12) — as the Eagles triumphed 80-66 at PAS Gymnasium on Friday evening.
“We struggled to match their intensity,” PAS head coach Michael Slaba noted.
Windom’s Charles Erickson drained a 3-pointer from the right wing as the Eagles bolted to a 10-0 lead at the 14:54 mark of the first half.
Teammate Elliot Serreyn converted a 3-point play roughly three minutes later, and the Eagle margin was 23-4.
“You can tell all of their boys spent hours in the gym getting better,” Slaba said. “It’s paying off for them at the start of the season.”
The Arrows sliced the margin to 16 points several times during the latter stages of the first half, including 45-29 after a nifty give-and-go between Tagon Woelber and Nehemiah Ostermeier. Windom was ahead 50-32 at the break.
Makhi Winter drove through the lane for two points with 3:22 remaining in the second half, and Windom’s lead was down to 11 (72-61).
Woelber played tough defense on Windom’s next offensive possession, forcing a turnover.
The Arrows had one chance to cut the margin to single digits; however, Quintin Tietz blocked a Winter shot inside the paint, and Erickson delivered the 3-point nail in the coffin.
“I am proud of how the boys fought back,” Slaba said. “Windom started to stall, which got them out of rhythm. We started to play with more intensity, which ultimately led us to start coming back.”
Winter posted a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds, with Austin Musch adding 17 and Woelber 15. Landon Quist was tops on the Arrows with 13 boards, including three on the offensive glass, plus two blocked shots. Woelber also had six assists and two steals.
Four Windom players reached double-digit scoring with Erickson 22 points, Serreyn 17, Carter Rossow 15 and Job Ogeka 10.
Ogeka’s scoring included a highlight-reel dunk in the opening half, pushing the Eagle lead to 21.
The Eagles played a clean game with just 11 turnovers, had 14-4 edge on 3-point goals made and a 23-14 difference in overall free-throw attempts.
Arrows notes
PAS (1-4) played at Murray County Central in Slayton on Monday evening in advance of Friday’s Big South Conference contest versus Marshall.
The Arrows defeated the Rebels, 54-47. Winter scored 20.
The Pipestone Arrows Athletic Boosters have announced there will be a special meal deal. Hot ham and cheese with chips will be sold for $5.
