Chesaning earned a spot in the Division 3 boys golf state meet, finishing second in Wednesday’s regional at The Fortress in Frankenmuth.

Millington also qualified for the state meet, but it wasn’t as easy for the Cardinals.

Essexville Garber claimed the regional title with a 340, followed by Chesaning at 344. Millington and Shepherd tied for the third and final qualifying position with 347s.

The Cardinals, however, won the tiebreaker thanks to a 99 from No. 5 golfer Jake Rodammer to beat Shepherd’s No. 5 golfer. Shepherd’s Christopher Crockett earned medalist honors with a 71.

Luke Skaryd led Chesaning with an 83, good for seventh place. He was followed by the rest of his team in 18th place, with Charlie Clover, Quinton Everett and Justin Lange tying with 87s.

Brad Coleman finished fifth with an 82 to lead Millington, with Bryce Martin shooting an 83 for seventh place. Landon Germain followed with an 88, Gabe Dueweke with a 94 and Rodammer with the tiebreaking 99.

Caro’s Cole Marcola shot a 78 and Bullock Creek’s Colton Lower carded an 80 to qualify as individuals for the Division 3 meet June 6-7 at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University.

Boys Golf

Division 2 at Harbor Springs: Freeland placed three golfers in the Top 10, finishing second at The Moor Golf Course with a 311. Bay City Western won the regional title with a 301. Tristan Pohl and Brandon Moon led the Falcons, tying for third with 75s. Samuel Ruth followed with a 76 to finish seventh with Luke Watz carding an 85 to earn a spot in the Division 2 state meet June 6-7 at Bedford Valley in Battle Creek.

Division 1 at Davison: Midland Dow used its depth to finish second with a 305 and earn a spot in the Division 1 state meet June 6-7 at Forest Akers West at Michigan State. Davison won with a 294. Troy Che led the Chargers with a 74 to finish 11th, with David Han 15th with a 76. Dylan Phillips was 25th with a 77 and Vincenzo Fabiano 29th with a 78.

Softball

Frankenmuth 11, Bay City John Glenn 0: Chloe Compau threw a five-inning perfect game, striking out 12 in the pre-district matchup. Miranda Polly led the Frankenmuth offense with three hits, while Emma Sprowl added two. Bri Barker contributed two walks and a double.

Millington 17, Burton Atherton 0: Millington scored 14 runs in the bottom of the first inning to run away with the pre-district win. Lilly Damm led the Millington offense with two hits, including a triple, walk, three runs and four RBIs.

Freeland 15-17, Birch Run 14-6: Jenna Kowalski had five hits, including a homer, and four RBIs to lead Freeland to the nine-inning win in Game 1. Madeline McDonald added four hits, including a homer, and three RBIs. Grace Deshone, Brynn Jaime and Emma Deshone had three hits each for the Falcons. Kowalski added three hits and four RBIs in the Game 2 win, with Emma Deshone and Jaime adding three hits each. Makenzie Bell earned the win for the 20-12 Falcons.

Valley Lutheran 4-16, Beaverton 2-6: Valley Lutheran swept Beaverton in a non-conference doubleheader, with Sarah Boyer throwing a three-hitter with six strikeouts in the Game 1 win. Olivia Parker, Mia Winningham and Lillian Garcia had two hits each, with Boyer walking twice. In the second game, Kendelle Klemish led the Valley Lutheran offense with four hits and three RBIs, with Winningham adding two hits and two stolen bases. Elsie Hultberg, Adalie Ziozios and Boyer walked two times each, with Magdalena Valasek and Boyer driving in two runs each.

Baseball

Chesaning 8, Durand 0: Brady Sager (9-0) threw a no-hitter, striking out 17 and walking two in seven innings for the pre-district win. Sager, Max Volk, Adam Woodcock and Hudson Persails had two hits each to lead the 27-6 Indians. Sager and Volk drove in two runs each, with Woodcock stealing four bases for the Indians, who advance to a district semifinal Saturday against Ovid-Elsie at New Lothrop.

Freeland 5, Alma 2: Carter McLaren allowed four hits and struck out 13 in a complete-game win in a pre-district matchup for Freeland. The 26-7 Falcons advance to face Shepherd in a district semifinal Saturday. Kaden Gerzseny and Tyler Hileman led the Freeland offense with two hits each, while Nic Haas added a double and RBI.

Michigan Lutheran Seminary 6, Breckenridge 4: Caleb Martin allowed four hits and no earned runs in six innings, striking out two as MLS earned a pre-district win. Will Salgat, Ethan Wakefield and Eli Lewis had two hits each, with Salgat walking twice and Wakefield scoring three times. Noah Barr and Keegan Suhr led Breckenridge with two hits each, while Gavin Corbat drove in two runs.

Merrill 15, St. Charles 0: Merrill earned a three-winning win in a Division 4 pre-district game, with Bryce Mechem striking out five and allowing no hits and no walks. Harrison Ayotte led the offense with three hits and four RBIs, while Braden Buckley, Ethan Mattson and Brendan Becker added two hits each. Mattson and Becker drove in three runs each for the 17-13 Vandals, who advance to the district semifinals Saturday against Saginaw Arts & Sciences.

Valley Lutheran 6, Carrollton 1: Trey Flood allowed three hits, one run and one walk over six innings, striking out 10 to lead Valley Lutheran to the pre-district win. Ben Diener and Jacob Grimpo had two RBIs each, with Dylan Pugh stealing two bases.

Midland High 15, Saginaw United 0: Midland earned a three-inning win in a Division 1 pre-district game, moving on to the district semifinals Saturday against Heritage. Eli Kell led the Chemics with two hits and five RBIs. Liam Heinz earned the three-inning win, giving up no hits and striking out eight. Noah Wall and Tabor Edwards-Benner added two hits each for the Chemics.

Heritage 8, Fenton 7: Matt Shaner Jr. had two hits, including a three-run homer, and worked out of a bases-loaded jam to lead Heritage to a non-conference, nine-inning win. Fenton loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh, but Trevor Selk threw out a runner at the plate and Dakota Shaner made a play at shortstop for the third out. Jack Thompson had three doubles and two RBIs for the 16-13 Hawks, with Brody Banning adding three hits and three RBIs. Alex McNish earned the win with two innings of shutout relief.

Hemlock 6-9, Shepherd 1-12: Chad Brown struck out 13 and allowed no earned runs to improve to 9-1 for Hemlock. Landon Zastrow and Mitchell Radosa had two hits each for the Huskies, with Zastrow driving in three runs. Schmidt added two hits in the Game 2 loss, with Radosa hitting his fifth home run of the season and driving in three runs. Brown also hit a homer with Tim Huston driving in two runs for the 23-7-1 Huskies.

Bullock Creek 8-13, Bay City Central 6-3: Bullock Creek earned the non-conference sweep, with Hunter Habitz earning the Game 1 win with two shutout innings in relief. Connor Curtis got the save with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings. Alex Kikta and Braden Swanson had two RBIs each for the Lancers. In Game 2, Jaxon Flowers, Curtis and Elliott Bass – who earned the win – had two hits and two RBIs each.

Girls Soccer

Midland High 4, Traverse City Central 0: Midland High improved to 19-0, earning a shutout in a Division 1 district semifinal. Midland took a 1-0 halftime lead off an Elliott Hays goal from a corner kick by Reagan Vokal. Sydney Fulcher, Alahna Beckett and Lizzy Striebel followed with second-half goals, with Ameris Blumenschein and Vokal getting the assists. Niobe Marchalant and Ellee Arnold shared time in goal for the Midland High shutout. Midland advances to the district title game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Midland Community Stadium against rival Midland Dow, a 5-1 winner over Traverse City West.

Boys Track

Thumb Meet of Champs: Brayden Karwat claimed a pair of titles for Frankenmuth in the Thumb Meet of Champs in Caro. Karwat won the 110 hurdles (:15.55) and 300 hurdles (:41.44), while teammate Nick Parker won the 1,600 (4:33.98). Parker also ran a leg on the winning 3,200 relay (8:21.06) with Troy Trudell, Brett Magnus and Anthony Plana. Millington’s Dallas Walsh won the 100 (:11.37), with Caro’s Jacob Moore claiming the 800 (1:59.07).

Mid-Michigan Meet of Champs: Alma senior Aiden Fletcher claimed a pair of titles at the Mid-Michigan all-star meet at Breckenridge. Fletcher won the 100 (:11.64) and 200 (:23.14), while teammate Kevin Terpstra claimed the 3,200 (10:23.77). Alma also won the 1,600 relay (3:35.27) behind Thomas Larson, Ezekiel Baltierra, Bodie Hess and Alexander Reiss. Landon Pestrue of St. Louis won the 800 (2:00.02), while Breckenridge’s Andrew Clark took the shot put (50-6 ¾), and Zander Mapes won the discus (151-8).

Don Krueger Meet of Champs: Saginaw United’s Jamarion Goodman, Hemlock’s Noah Van Haitsma and Bullock Creek’s Chris Tetloff were double winners at the Don Krueger Meet of Champions at Hemlock. Goodman won the 400 (:51.17) and 1,600 (4:43.20), Van Haitsma claimed the 110 hurdles (:18.03) and 300 hurdles (:42.35) and Tetloff took first in the shot put (52-3) and discus (155-111 ½). United also got wins from Johnny Brown in the 100 (:11.60), Blake Jones in the high jump (6-0) and Tellis Sears in the long jump (19-3 ½), with Brown running legs on United’s winning 400 relay (:46.07) and 800 relay (1:35.55). Valley Lutheran got a win from Andrew Kunisch in the 200 (:23.26) and Trent Schiavone in the 800 (2;05.39), with Schiavone running a leg in the winning 1,600 relay (3:37.31). Bullock Creek added a first in the 3,200 relay (9:42.92).

Girls Track

Thumb Meet of Champs: Frankenmuth’s Natalie Foltz won the 800 (2:15.62) and ran a leg on the winning 3,200 relay (9:51.89) with Lucy Conzelmann, Elise Barden and Gabby Cleveland. Millington claimed a pair of wins with Chloe Basner finishing first in the 100 (:12.67) and Abigail Reis in the 3,200 (12:20.60).

Mid-Michigan Meet of Champs: Alma’s Joy Evans and St. Louis’ Tess Farkas claimed two titles each in the Mid-Michigan all-star meet at Breckenridge. Evans won the 400 (:58.57) and long jump (17-8), while Farkas took first in the shot put (36-6 ½) and discus (118-6). Alma’s Allison Sandro won the high jump (4-10), with Ithaca’s Makinna Foglesong taking first in the 3,200 (12:10.69). Ithaca also won the 1,600 relay (4:14.14) and 3,200 relay (10:14.54), with Izabelle LaLone and Myleigh Hephner running a leg in each.

Don Krueger Meet of Champions: Nouvel’s Claire Long, Valley Lutheran’s Mckenzie Derusha and Hemlock’s Nellie Maltby were double winners at the Don Krueger Meet of Champions at Hemlock. Long won the 200 (:25.62) and 400 (:58.08), Derusha claimed the 100 hurdles (:17.70) and 300 hurdles (:48.47) and Maltby took first in the shot put (33-7 ½) and discus (93-8 ½). Valley Lutheran also got wins from Lindsey Cmeyla in the 800 (2:29.56) and Ava Kelsey in the long jump (14-11 ½). Other winners included Saginaw Arts & Sciences’ Laila Mitchell in the 100 (:12.99), St. Charles’ Landry Gomez in the 1,600 (5:46.21), Bullock Creek’s Autumn Fransen in the 3,200 (13:17.14), Hemlock’s Jyllian Corwin in the high jump (4-4) and Bullock Creek’s Sofia Skym in the pole vault (9-3). Saginaw United won the 400 relay (:54.16), with Bullock Creek taking first in the 800 relay (1:49.16), 1,600 relay (4:21.59) and 3,200 relay (11:41.58). Brooklynn Johnson and Josephine Cabala ran legs on the 1,600 relay and 3,200 relay, while Madison Vican and Alexis Bradshaw-Hillabrand ran legs on the winning 800 relay and 1,600 relay.

Sheridan HS Boys Track and Field: The Sheridan High School Boys Track and Field team repeated as 4A State Champs and won their 4th title in 5 years.

The Broncs were 17½ points better than Star Valley, but it wasn’t until the final 2 events, when they were able to distance themselves from the Braves in the standings.

The 2 teams as well as Natrona County had been in a 3-team race for most of the 3-day competition.

Senior Chace Morris says going into the final day, he was not pleased with where Sheridan was, and the eventual margin of victory should have been more than what it was.

On the final day, Morris ended up winning the 100 and 200 meter dash races, while Otto won both hurdles races.

Rudy Green contributed with a 3rd place finish in the 400 meter dash.

Star Valley would keep things close with 3 runners in the top 8 of the 1600 meter run, but Sheridan’s 4 by 400 meter relay team made the final statement, by setting a new overall state record.

Sheridan HS Boys Soccer: Sheridan’s bid to win just their second state championship in school history, came up short in the state championship game against Jackson.

Since there was no interaction between 4A East and 4A West teams during the season before the state tournament, there were minimal opportunities for each team to watch the other live and in person.

Head Coach Wade Kinsey says the team was ready for the championship game and in the end, the Broncs have nothing to hang their heads over.

Sheridan finishes the 2025 season with a record of 16-2-2.

Colorado Rockies Baseball: The Colorado Rockies lost game 2 of their 3-game series last night at the Chicago Cubs, 4-3 in 11 innings.

Brenton Doyle hit a solo home run for the cause.

The Rocks will try to avoid the sweep as the 2 teams conclude the series today starting at 6:05pm.

Tomorrow is an off-day on the schedule, and then on Friday, Colorado will start a 3-game series at the New York Mets.

NBA Playoffs: The Indiana Pacers won Game 4 of their best of 7 Eastern Conference Finals series at home vs. the New York Knicks 130-121, to take a 3-games-to-1 series lead.

Tonight is Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals between Minnesota and Oklahoma City.

The Thunder lead that series 3-1 and will try to finish off the Timberwolves and advance to the NBA Finals.

NHL Playoffs: Edmonton won Game 4 of their best of 7 Western Conference Finals series at home vs. Dallas 4-1, to take a 3-games-to-1 series lead.

Tonight is Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals between Florida and Carolina.

The defending Stanley Cup Champion Panthers lead that series 3-1 and will try to finish off the Hurricanes and return to the Stanley Cup Finals.
